“Our stay at Estancia was exactly what we were looking for. We wanted a quiet, restful place in the desert, with a few walkable attractions, but without the expense or tourists (or bad weather) in San Pedro. Estancia in Chiu Chiu was just that. But what made our time special were the hosts, Susanna and Jorge. They were quick to respond to our requests, waiting for us when we arrived, always available for our questions, and even dropped us off at the bus stop to Calama (which is only 1500 pesos). There is no liquor store in the town but they did have a few fine Chilean wines for purchase at a reasonable price. And they served a delicious breakfast each morning. Susanna and Jorge aren't always there. They both have jobs in Calama. But we were fortunate to have them there full time because they were on vacation. We also were the only guests so there was lots of privacy. I highly recommend Estancia.”

“If you are thinking of staying your first night in the Atacama region near Calama, this should be your choice! Chiuchiu is just a half hour from Calama, but it is another world. Silvia’s place is near town so it is easy to visit the very old church, and just a half hour north is the ruin of a Spanish fortress in a stunning valley. The caretaker recommended a northern approach to San Pedro de Atacama that was my favorite drive in the region. As he said, “You will have the road to yourself.” It ran past lakes, wetlands, waterfalls, wild flowers, flocks of flamingoes, herds of lacuna, and dozens of wild donkeys. In addition to the great advice, Sylvia’s place provides a quiet and peaceful sleep. In the morning you can make your breakfast helped by the local cat or head into town for a feast. No WiFi while I visited, but I barely noticed — I was having such an incredible time!”
