“After a month’s stay, I’ve become infected with Ayvalik’s magical aura. It was the town’s loving and generous people; the idillic nature; the scent of burning wood permeating the town’s salty air; the endless maze of cobble stone alleys and old architecture of olive oil presses, soap plants, churches and mosques. This laidback sea town invites long walks on its miles and miles of accessible beaches. You can almost smell the millions of olive trees and pine and oak green covers. It has its sporadic winter showers but with a tempered climate. Sit on any of the benches dotting miles and miles of seafront and watch squawking seabirds dive into the calm sea. Watch fishermen displaying their daily catch on their aging boats. Shop at dozens of olive oil shops or visit the Thursday or Sunday market (pazar). Ayvalik’s spellbound journey wouldn’t have been complete without Monika and Sedat, the Stairway owners who become more of friends and family than hosts, along with their many cultured friends of Turkish and German backgrounds. Ayvalik and Stairway was what made this experience unforgettable. The couple never sit still. They’re either receiving visitors for tea and coffee or holding gatherings for friends and customers. They prepare the Mezza plates, play Turkish music, blues, jazz and oldies on the main room’s speakers or invite musicians to play live. Monika speaks good English and will give you all the special tips for the best eateries, cheese and olive oil shops. The third floor is reserved for yoga; and females can book a professional masseuse. This renovated old Greek home and the room you’ll occupy exudes real warmth and peace. The thick stone walls, high ceiling; the red brick arches inside; the wooden round antique table and the iron wood burning furnace in the salon and the wooden floors will send your thoughts a century back. Yep, this was a fulfilled dream escape. Try it.”

“I can' t describe how great it was with this couple! They are such kind people and as Monika speaks german fluently, I had great conversations with her and she was in all kind of way helpful, welcoming and a very inspiring woman. I felt as I knew her since many years and not only for 2 days :-) The location is awesome, very cosy and there are even yoga sessions, live bands playing there while you enjoy a drink/ breakfast/ dinner.... I can only recommend this place if you want a good stay and have some inspiring conversations as they are really engaged into environmental and social work!”
