This cottage is built using a method called ". Rammed earth building involves compressing earth and stabilizer within a frame to form a wall . The technique is perhaps one of the oldest used in the construction of shelter. With a clay tile roof, wood ceiling and earth walls, our cottage is the perfect example of a green home.
“Okay, where do we (my wife and I) begin with this incredible gem (I, Adam, am writing this on our behalf)? Breathtaking, heartwarming, tranquil, pleasant, delightful, etc., etc., etc., etc. Truly, this was a magical, majestic experience. We feel there are not enough adjectives in the English language to capture how wonderful our experience truly was. Sue, Roshan, and Padma are angelic spirits (we will elaborate on these beautiful souls in a bit). We realize how pretentious and artificial this all sounds, but the reality is these individuals were defining to what is now perhaps the most memorable experience of our lifetime. From Day 0--well before we even arrived in Sri Lanka--Sue and her husband, Uthpala, were so incredibly generous with their time and assistance. Just thinking about how many heartening experiences we had and genuine people we were fortunate to share time with all because of Sue is so uplifting. From Nuwan, who picked us from the airport and pleasantly and patiently chauffeured us all the way to Sue's Earth house several hours away; to Vijith, who enthusiastically facilitated our wildlife safari experience; to Asela, who saw us off to the airport when it was time to leave and was one of the most jolly, patient, and knowledgeable people we met; to our dear Roshan and Padma, who were our family away from home for even the brief time we were in Sri Lanka (and this we mean from the bottom of our hearts); it was all because of Sue we were able to make these connections. Sri Lanka is one of Earth's true paradises. Period. Now, regarding Sue and Uthpala's Earth house--this is bliss defined. The Earth house itself is cozy, comfortable, simple, and an extension of nature. Please ground your expectations and understand a stay at Sue and Uthpala's Earth house is a stay in and with nature. The Earth house itself has every modern essential one could ask for--a cooling unit, Internet, electricity, refrigerator, shower, beautiful tub, toilet, bidet, sink, bed, etc. I believe I only saw two mosquitoes our ENTIRE trip, so that was a non-issue. However, we DID see a bat, many lizards, frogs, water snakes, beetles, a beautiful (incredibly petite) jungle mouse, ants, birds (Kingfishers), dragonflies, butterflies, turtles, monkeys, and peacocks--ALL on Sue and Uthpala's property--it was sublime; not to mention the incredibly cute and sweet companions (dogs) on the property who would gently accompany us on our relaxing moments sitting on the porch peering into the beautiful lake, strolls around the property, and walks to the outdoor kitchen where we had some of the best meals of our life courtesy of Roshan and Padma; Leslie, Pooja, and a third pup who's name we forget (but was equally as sweet) were their names. So, if you cannot tolerate sharing your space with such wonderful creatures, reevaluate your planning. There is so much to say with such little time and space to do so, therefore, we will wrap this up with highlighting our dear Roshan and Padma--the caretakers and resident angels on Sue and Uthpala's property. Roshan and Padma are simply beautiful people. The amount of warmth, kindness, pride, duty, respect, and hospitality we experienced from Roshan and Padma will forever remain of our most treasured memories. Some of the best food we had in Sri Lanka and in our lifetime were prepared by Roshan and Padma. The epitome of true, local cuisine. Just eat the food. I don't care how unfamiliar it is to you. Just do it. Enjoy, try, experience, and cherish. Some of the most responsive, thorough, and caring assistance was provided by Roshan--facilitated by Sue. Daily we would eat Roshan and Padma's food, talk, and even have our "conversations" (emphasis on the quotes, ha ha) in Sinhala; Padma loved teaching us new phrases and was genuinely delighted at our devouring (ha ha) of the food. She would peer around the corner as we tried new dishes to see how we liked it (it brings a smile just thinking about it). There is so, so much more to say, and I truly could write a short novel on the heartening experience this was (as I am sure you can gather from reading this), but let me end with saying this was paradise for us, bliss for us, what one could ever hope for from a honeymoon experience. Sue, Roshan, Padma and everyone else deserve your ABSOLUTE respect--please give it to them. Please. They are beyond deserving of all your respect and compassion. I hope those who read this are lucky enough to meet everyone we described and enjoy this majestic experience. -Adam & Ashwini”

“WOOOOW! Do yourself a favor and stay here. Such a beautiful and unique experience. Uthpala, Supipi and their staff were so kind and hospitable. They were so helpful in providing suggestions, advice, and even set us up with better wifi when we mentioned we couldn't reach our families. We ate almost all of our meals there and have no regrets- Some of the best food we've had during our Sri Lankan trip. Major awesomness- they have a masseuse on staff who is amazing. He does the massages in this beautiful little house on the property. YOU HAVE TO GET THE MESSAGE! IT WAS SOOO GOOD! And it only cost about 16 bucks for a whole hour of the best massage of your life. Overall, loved every aspect of this stay.”

“This was our first stop in Sri Lanka. Manjula, Upali's son, met us at Colombo airport and drove carefully to the place. The house is very big, the room is in the guests area with a kitchen and a sitting area that you can use. You will be hosted by a very educated, wealthy and kind family. Upali was always available and communicative, even when we were leaving for pidarangala rock at 5am he was up checking if everything was ok. The breakfast cooked by Upali's wife was amazing, huge and very tasty (not spicy). Samabe, the family's friend, kindly showed us around and took us to Kandy. I can highly recommend this place if you are planning to visit sigiriya, pidarangala, dambulla temple and if you are looking for a genuine Sri Lankan hospitality experience.”
