“Yap is incredibly small and it's easy to walk around Colonia. While there isn't much infrastructure for tourism, the places that do exist are fantastic. The Oceania is a gem among them. Set back into the hills and barely visible from the surrounding areas, your personal bungalow is cozy and private. These delightful bungalows are rustic Yapese construction, but with all of the modern conveniences. The Oceania's reputation for amazing food is well deserved. JR knows his way around an ingredient or two, and we were never disappointed with our meals. Jenn and Mark, the proprietors, are full of local intel and freely share suggestions, ideas, or even just helpful hints on the local culture. Everyone on staff at the Oceania was really wonderful (special thanks to Cecilia and her brilliant hospitality!). We couldn't have asked for a better place to rest our heads or just laze about on the porch, or hang out in the open restaurant area, or... you get the point. The Oceania is a fabulous choice, and if you're going to Yap, it would be hard to pass up on such a unique opportunity. One thing to note; all jungles are trying to reclaim back their territory and erase all traces of human civilization. As such, don't expect an immaculate, Disneyland-esque aesthetic. A few rough edges are to be expected of this kind of climate and if that's not your style, then you may reconsider tropical islands as a vacation destination. In spite of the jungle's attempts, Yap has been our favorite vacation in the last 7 years, and the Oceania, Jenn, Mark, and everyone else played a large part in that. There is no question that we will be back in the coming years.”

“This was my first time to FSM and I was aware that prices where expensive. Compared to other hotels, this one is at an excellent price point. I booked here and then another hotel (almost double cost) and I would much rather prefer staying at Kioyoshi's place. First of all the view is just incredible. It really is. It also sits near a mangrove swamp below and loads of birds fly around. The yard was beautiful chickens running around that scamper when it rains. But most of all I appreciated the hospitality. Valentin (fellow I chatted with most at hotel) was an excellent host and I lacked for nothing during my stay. He's a really interesting guy with great insights into local culture. Free airport transfer and take a taxi anywhere for a dollar so location not an issue as it's about 10-12 mins walk to town. I walked to town a fair number of times. Totally safe. Dogs might bark, just don't run from them. Hiss at them and act confident and no issues. The restaurant there had excellent food too. The ladies did my laundry when I needed. I was bummed to check out and would happily return. The rooms may appear a bit older but don't expect the Taj Majal at this price point. For what you get it's incredibly good value and I will stay here again for sure. Highly recommended if you want to be around locals and in a local setting instead of some overpriced place full of tourists.”
