  • My Grandma and I stayed here for three nights and could not have been happier. This is a beautifully decorated home that is very cozy and relaxing. If you love art and have an appreciation for local history this is a must stay. The hospitality and welcoming atmosphere that DeAnna and Gordon gave was very special. The rooms were clean, the shower was perfect after a long day of exploring, and the wifi was fast. I would stay here again. Thanks!

  • Deanana and Gordon's home built during the beginning of Amana's history is lovely. The rugs, art, and original walnut and cherry furniture pieces could be featured in a "this old house" magazine. Our two bedroom suite was clean and A perfect space for two women on a 48 hour outing in the amanas colonies. Gordon is 4th generation, and knows everything about the amana story. Plus the rhubarb wine he makes is exceptional.

  • It is a wonderful place to stay.

  • What a treat to spend time at DeAnna’s AirBnB! Whenever we travel, we like learning about the area we’re visiting, and DeAnna and Gordon shared so much about Amana history and culture with us. I’m sure it was a mere drop in the bucket of their collective knowledge, but it greatly enhanced our visit and left us wanting to know more. The lodging itself was clean, attractive, and comfortable! We loved staying in High Amana which had some fun history within walking distance! So happy we stayed at DeAnna’s AirBnB!

  • Great accommodations, comfortable beds, great knowledge of the area, quiet area. All around wonderful experience.

    Patricia2018-10-04T00:00:00Z
  • DeAnna and Gordon are sweet, genuine people who will welcome you and ensure your stay is comfortable. They both have in-depth knowledge of the area and its history, which is great when you’re looking for good meals or things to do. DeAnna seems born to the hospitality business with her flair for beautiful yet comfortable decor. And she can talk with you about any subject so easily you’ll feel like you’re with a close friend. She made me feel like I was visiting a favorite family member because she was so welcoming and warm. Gordon is an artist (you can see some of his amazing work in the pics for this listing) and he even lets you wander into his studio to watch him at work. He’s a quiet, kind man who patiently answered all of our (MANY!) questions about the local architecture, flora and fauna, building materials and methods, etc. DeAnna left us two printed pages of every store and restaurant and the open hours (things close early in Amana!), as well as a list of all the local activities happening during our stay. We used it every day. The furnishings, beds, pillows, linens, towels, soaps, shampoos, etc. were all top quality. Seriously, better than I have at home. They have a beautiful outdoor space full of flowers and a lush green lawn with beautiful trees dotted around. And there’s also a large well house they have converted into another comfortable place to sit and relax. Have you ever been in the backyard of an established, talented gardener who has been working that space for years? Where it’s just a lush riot of color all over the place and it seems like a secret garden? It’s like that. They were not at all intrusive but were available immediately when we called out greetings as we came and went, and when we had a question or needed guidance/direction. My only disappointment is there are no longer any Amish people in the Amana Colonies. Didn’t see a single buggy or bonnet, and that’s the only reason I wanted to go to Amana. BUT, I so thoroughly enjoyed DeAnna and Gordon, and felt so comfortable and at home there, I plan to go back JUST to visit them again and have a peaceful, relaxing weekend away. I can’t recommend this listing, and this couple, enough. If you’re worried they aren’t close enough to the shops, don’t be. Amana is a 7 minute drive and parking is plentiful. They are situated perfectly between the towns which make up the colonies, which are all close together. This is a wonderful place to call home at the end of your busy day and I highly, highly recommend!

  • We had such a fabulous time meeting DeAnna and Gordon. Their house was so warm and inviting, and so beautifully decorated!! If you are an art lover, this is an extra special experience! They graciously shared some of their living space and it was fun to just relax and get to know them one evening. You won't be disappointed!!

  • Huge home with lower guest suite that includes a bathroom and ante-room with TV and an extra twin bed. Tons of art work and decorations to look at. Enter through a large kitchen. There is a table set up with cereal, coffee, glasses for water, etc. Outside is well kept, pretty garden, patio to hang out. Hosts are super nice. Look for the rabbit statue to find the driveway.

We love our country retreat, and want to share it with you! Perfect for both small or large groups with plenty of space, indoors & out! Enjoy the beautiful countryside along with farm fresh eggs from our own hens. Local, fresh produce from Northern Ridge Farm & Market is just across the road. We are located on a prime bicycle route, and close to the historic Amana Colonies, historic Kalona Village, Coralvile/Iowa City. We're a 25 minute drive to Kinnick Stadium & the University of Iowa/UIHC.
Beautifully restored and renovated early 1900's home, which once served as a coach house.
We live in a rural setting with a couple of visible neighboring homes and a farm & market across the road. There is a farm and a pasture close by where cows are kept on and off throughout the year. We sit on a semi-busy, paved road, and are 3 miles from the closest small town (Oxford).
  • If you plan to stay at "The Roost" do yourself a favor and add one more day to your plans. There might be lots to do in the area but you won't regret just staying in to enjoy all the amenities that Terri and Brian have at their home. Fresh eggs on site as well as a delicious baked confection from Terri just added to our relaxing family time together. We highly recommend "The Roost" and look forward to returning!

  • Teri thinks of EVERYTHING you may need. The Roostery is by far one of the best Air BNB I’ve stayed at. The house was wonderfully appointed- Teri thought of all the details! Even thinking of leaving a flashlight at the front door when she knew we were out and coming back when the power had gone out. Everything is exactly (or better) than described. There were just four of us- two couples so there was more than enough space. For larger groups I could see having plenty of areas for groups to spread out. For example the living room had a large tv but adjacent was another sitting area. The screened porch could hold another group etc coupled w another area by the pool/fire pit in the back yard. The house, pool, and other amenities were outstanding. The kitchen is my dream kitchen. There was so much room to sit and visit. While the weather wasn’t that great- I can imagine if the weather had been warmer really enjoying the patio, front porch etc. We were visiting Amana Colonies which was a very short drive. I would hands down recommend the Roostery for a family reunion, girls get away or family gatherings!! Teri was an excellent communicator and very flexible in check in etc. WiFi was great. Also very quiet too. The only thing we can’t attest to well is how close a grocery/market is to the Roostery. It really was no deal w us as we were there for two nights and had planned to only eat breakfast there. Besides it is so close to Oxford and Amana AND Teri had stocked the pantry and refrigerator with so much, I can’t imagine there’ll be any issue. Extremely a good deal!!!

  • Amazing!! We stayed here this past weekend for our dental school class reunion and it was awesome. Terri is an amazing host. She baked us banana bread upon our arrival and it was delicious. All of the amenities that are included are phenomenal. It is a really great value and I highly recommend this place!

    Kimberly2018-09-16T00:00:00Z
  • The house and amenities were amazing! During our stay, the weather was too cold so unfortunately we were unable to take advantage of some of the amenities. Terri was great and checked in on us daily to inquire if any assistance was needed. She even baked us banana bread that was very yummy! The only downfall is if you are traveling for a Hawkeye football game, taxis/ubers can get quite expensive ($50-60). Other than that, the house itself and the stay was a great experience!

    Elaine2018-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • The Roost was an amazing place for our college friends reunion. The huge, gorgeous kitchen allowed everyone to hang out while meals were being made and the living room had ample seating for all. The bedrooms were comfortable and everyone enjoyed the pool this (very warm) weekend! All of the amenities meant we didn’t have to leave the house all weekend and were able to soak in every last minute of togetherness. Everyone agreed we’d love to come back!

    Nichole & Joel2019-07-21T00:00:00Z
  • We were ecstatic that The Roost lived up to (and exceeded!) our high expectations that we built in our minds when looking at the beautiful photos online. It is a gorgeous property with SO MUCH SPACE and many modern amenities to cover everything you'll need during your stay. The kitchen is huge, well-stocked, and updated with modern appliances –– with plenty of space to cook and seat guests if you are entertaining, too. The main living room area is so spacious (yet cozy) with incredibly comfortable leather recliners and a plush area rug. The bedroom accommodations were very comfortable as well; we were shocked how well we slept! The main bathroom upstairs is also spacious and clean, stocked with fresh towels and toiletries. We were fortunate to take advantage of the pool and hot tub outside, too -- huge "extras" that made the stay extra-special! Terri and Brian were very gracious hosts, and so friendly and communicative! Checkin was a breeze, and wifi was available. They provided a delicious breakfast of fresh pastries and other goodies every morning, and were always responsive to any questions we had. We would highly recommend The Roost to anyone looking to stay near the Amana Colonies, and would 10/10 visit again ourselves! Thanks again, Terri and Brian. P.S. One note to potential guests about their pets: The dog and cat live within the house and are onsite the majority of the time. So, if you have any reservations about animal interaction (or, like me, surprise allergies!) be prepared.

  • Terri was a fantastic host. Responsive and flexible on check-in and check-out. Even offered to help find us a babysitter for our kids. Super helpful. House exactly as represented in pictures. Nice big and clean pool and hot tub! Only 20 mins from Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Beautiful country side and farms nearby. Our kids loved caring for the chickens on site. Highly recommend.

  • So beautiful! We haven’t stopped talking about it since we left. The pictures do it no justice. Way better than we even expected (and we had high expectations) The price is unbelievable. I talked to all of my friends and they want to do a weekend getaway there. Thanks to the hosts. I’ve never had a host provide food, shampoos, and such! Great experience!

Kellenberger Art Haus-Upstairs 2 Bedroom Suite with German Parlor in quiet historic district of High Amana. Three single beds, and ROKU TV. Share upstairs bathroom in hallway with one other guest. Home of resident artist, surrounded by farm fields and timber. Share kitchen, dining area, and coffee maker downstairs. Sit and relax inside our newly remodeled antique wash house in the courtyard! Also available downstairs: Two-Bedroom Spacious Suite/sleeps 2-3: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/24021568
The home was built by a communal Christian society in 1863, led by prophetic leader Christian Metz. It has retained most of its original floor plan, which was fashioned for multi-family living. This included a common hallway with two-room dwellings for single people. Communal kitchens closed in 1932. A kitchen was then added to this home, and the attached harness and leather shoe repair shop is now our living room. Relive the atmosphere of a colorful German Oma's Haus, featuring antique furnishings made in the Amana Colonies and resident artist paintings. The home overlooks a spacious yard with old lilacs and the sandstone Arts Guild (Open May 1-October 1) with exhibits and handcrafted gift shop, which was a former church building in the communal era.
It is a short walk around the entire village of High Amana, up to the cemetery and back. The Amana Arts Guild Center with gift shop is next door (Open May-October). The old-fashioned High Amana General store is a block away (Check with the Amana Heritage Museum for days/hours). Also visit the Visitors Center in Main Amana (about 5 miles east) concerning museums, shopping, van driven tours, theater and seasonal events.
  • DeAnna's place is a beautiful historic home. We felt wonderfully taken care of in our short time there. The apartment was clean, comfy, and private and DeAnna is a welcoming and knowledgeable host.

  • We very much enjoyed DeAnna's lovely home! It's fascinating to be surrounded by so much history and culture, and with such a local connection. Highly recommended for those looking for country tradition.

  • If you’re looking to experience Amana, but you like a bit more of your own space and a kitchen to prepare your own food in, as opposed to a BnB, this is a great find. Deanna and her whole family are friendly fonts of local knowledge, and there are lots of lovely personal touches and antiques to puzzle over. Worth a stay!

    Rebecca2018-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • DaAnna and Gordon are wonderful hosts. The artwork in the hallway is quite wonderful. The apartment is decorated with antiques, and the beds are authentic Amana colony style. The parlor room is great for reading or playing games.

    Meredith2019-05-28T00:00:00Z
  • Lisa worked so hard to make my visit a wonderful relaxing time. Her breakfasts are a visual and culinary delight. And she and her Husband, Jeff, have worked hard bringing the house back to it's peak of splendor in the 1800s with modern amenities such as heat, air conditioning and perfect water temperatures. They added a gazebo out back and hosted a wedding this year. Plus, I can imagine how comfortable their in ground pool is in the summer. It's beautiful to look at now. I will say, I'll be back. Thank you, Lisa and Jeff. ♡♡♡

  • This is a wonderful location and B&B. Breakfast was awesome! Relaxing and comfortable, yet just 15-20 minutes from University of Iowa and Iowa City's great downtown entertainment district. We were not there for the antiques, however the Amana Colonies are a dream for anyone liking the old German style buildings and shops. The people in the entire Iowa City area were very welcoming. Also, a great value for the price!

    Dale2017-11-05T00:00:00Z
  • Excellent! My friend and I met up for a girls weekend in Iowa and stayed here. The homemade breakfasts (French toast one day and cinnamon rolls + quiche the second day) were WONDERFUL. The room was so cute and the surrounding area provided lots of activity. The dining area was beautifully decorated in a fall theme as well. I would highly recommend a stay here. The room quality and breakfast was WAY worth the value we paid.

  • A charming village, so walkable with friendly people. I prefer meeting my hosts and a check-in with guests to my home, others may not. The cleanliness and air conditioning were much appreciated. Don’t make my mistake and not bring hair conditioner but, if you do, the General Store has a lovely and affordable variety pack of eco-friendly bee bath essentials.

  • This is a supper good place. The room is clean and tidy. And it locates at Amana colony, the center of the Amana. Moreover, Megan gave us very delicious German style breakfast. I like this place!

  • Megan's Buh Schloss B&B was lovely. We were in a well-preserved, historic house intended for multiple families, which was pretty neat. Since we were attending an event in Amana, the location was super convenient. Megan was very communicative and provided nice breakfast fair each morning. Thanks!

  • Lisa is top notch, and provided us with an amazing stay. The house itself is a beautiful, old home that fits perfectly with the Amana Colonies classic theme. However, it was updated nicely, and our room had its own thermostat, as well as a tv, DVD player, and plenty of electrical outlets. Lisa kept cookies, brownies, fruits and other snacks available in a communal guest kitchen, and her breakfast in the morning was to die for. Lastly, Lisa provided us valuable tips on where to go in town for eating, shopping, etc. it was a great stay, and I would highly recommend giving Lisa a shot if you’re visiting the Amana Colonies.

  • We truly enjoyed your B & B, and the time you took to explain some of the history of Amana. The rooms worked perfect for us. Loved the way they were decorated. We didn't want for anything. Our host was very considerate of all our needs. Had the feel of a true B & B. Very nice and cozy. Thanks again.

  • The place is charming, well decorated and comfortable. It is very peaceful as well. Lisa is available and makes the logistics very simple. She did a great job at preparing a dairy-free, grain-free breakfast for me :-)

  • I couldn't say a bad comment even if I tried. This was one of the most beautiful BnB rooms I have ever stayed in. Lisa thought of everything. The bed, massive space, the whirlpool tub. This room had it all. The bathroom, although I didn't need it, was filled with all the supplies you might have forgotten. Extra towels at your finger tips. Lots of natural sunlight filled the room. Now let's talk breakfast...go hungry because Lisa's stuffed French toast was so filling and delicious. I wanted more, but there was not way to fit it. The kitchen/dining area is full stocked with every tea and coffee you could think of. I can't wait to go back and stay here again. Both of us, LOVED this place! (Room 3! ) We never made it to the pool, but it was as clear as the ocean. Please check this BnB out for yourself. I know you'll love it as much as we did.
