  • Perfect place to stay for a bigger group. We took 4 kids to Kings Dominion. There was plenty of room for two adults and all four kids after a long day at the park. The house was clean, easy to get to, had some room in the backyard for the kids to play in, and Stephanie was very responsive. We would definitely stay here again

    Marie2019-06-10T00:00:00Z
  • I’ll start with the positives then we’ll go into the complaints. The size was nice and large, the description was accurate on size, amount of beds and what’s included. I did not need it, but the flexibility of the cancelation policy was nice and the owners were fairly quick to respond to my messages and questions. Did have toilet paper although no extra rolls anywhere in the house, coffee maker although an old one.. This house appears to have belonged to an elderly person prior to the current owners took it over. My sense is that they took this house over did a basic clean out of some old junk, bough some random stuff from flea markets for the renters or left what was there from the person before. Consider an elderly person house, beaten up, very dated with tons of problems. When you first walk in all you smell is mold and mildew, doors don’t close all the way including the bathroom, washer/dryer are old and loud and not maintained, old junk is left around the house, including random junk in drawers and closets. The outside is screaming for help with full trash bins, junk in the yard, and the house in harsh need of repairs and updates. Now for the best part.. in the back are concrete stairs that go down to the basement with a drain at the bottom of the stairs. As the washer machine drains in the house, the drain at the bottom os the stairs by the basement doors floods up with the water drained which means that all goes into the basement itself which I’m sure explains the moldy smell. Its simply not healthy for anyone to stay in this house for any period of time. I really would NOT recommend this house until the investors who own it put some money into it to make it somewhat decent or at the very least harmful to peoples health.

    Bernard2019-06-29T00:00:00Z
  • This house was bigger than I expected, had everything we needed, is in a safe and quiet location and makes for a great stay!

    Jeannette2019-09-14T00:00:00Z
  • Mrs.Stephanie is a great host! She is very nice and responsive to messages and her home is very nice and spacious. Definitely will come back!

  • You remember when you were a little kid, staying at grama's house? This is it, and I mean that in every positive way. Nothing pretentious, very comfortable. Toothbrushes, razors, and even coffee were provided. Location could not be better for a trip to Kings Dominion, or in our case Richmond. Quiet, convenient. Keeping this on my list for visits to my daughters in Richmond.

The water is supplied by a well and filtered, although we stock bottled water, feel free to taste the clean water from the tap. The term "The Cottage" is a kind of tongue-in-cheek name we gave to a transformed garage, it's really just a cool efficient space for up to 6 people. Our goal is to provide a true "home away from home" experience, like "I feel at home here" (even if it's just for a few days) We will give you a brief tour of the features on arrival (if you arrive late, we're cool with that. We have had more then a few first time Airbnb guests and you can see by our reviews we are getting closer to the "Home away from home" goal. When you arrive, we've had guests drive from distant locations, there are some beverages and snacks and most importantly Breakfast, it's one of the letters in Airbnb. You will find the refrigerator and cupboards stocked with breakfast items, so after your journey get a good night rest and wake up to breakfast supplies at the ready. We do have a "cleaning fee" I have a full time job and I'm usually not available at the time for cleaning so I pay a fair wage to those who keep the cottage clean. Feel free to make a reservation, ask a lot of questions, and if it's not for you it's okay to cancel. 18% Discount for 7 days 33% Discount for 28+ days. Is this your first booking on Airbnb? Quiet neighborhood, you will probably hear birds chirping and singing in the morning. No dogs are in the Cottage you may see small dogs, Topsy and Gracie, they will be kept away although they may bark at you from a distance, Topsy a Bichon likes attention he has a tail, Gracie - Cocker Poo and she is getting old and cranky very short tail we recommend you leave her alone, and Coco the Chihuahua is our latest addition, may say hello. We are semi-rural, the worst animal you may see is a deer driving up the driveway occasionally they may activate the motion sensor light usually in the winter months. Deer tend to scatter when you see them. Off in the distance you will hear far away trains passing by, it's not loud at our location but if you listen you can hear them. Feel free to walk around the property and enjoy the forest and grassy areas.
  • Ray is an incredible host, who cares about his guest. We ran behind schedule and he called to ensure we were safe and alright (a big plus in my book). I enjoyed the fact that we had privacy and no interruptions from the host or his family. Many amenities such as entertainment, towels, laundry accommodations, utensils, etc. was available and Ray displayed superb hospitality. He ensured we were familiar with the functions and layout of the house and made himself available if needed. The home is in a nice, cozy and quiet environment, which feels like a home away from home. I definitely recommend this location, you will not be disappointed.

  • Very clean and comfortable!

    Charles2018-11-11T00:00:00Z
  • All the wonderful things people have said really don't need to be said again, believe the reviews. Ray is helpful, personable and provided a super fun experience for us even though part of our trip was rained out. We had a kitchen to make dinner and movies and relaxed. Can't wait to go back

    Jennifer2019-07-24T00:00:00Z
  • The Cottage was very clean and had everything you could possibly need. The movie selection on the TV was great as well. There are many local and chain restaurants around and it's not too far from Richmond, which makes the location great. While we had our privacy, Ray was always available to answer any questions me and my family had. I will definitely consider staying at the Cottage again if I visit this area!

    Amanda2017-05-24T00:00:00Z
  • Ray was accommodating and helpful in helping me with my schedule. The place had everything you need for a comfortable stay!

    Jacqueline2017-11-10T00:00:00Z
  • This is such a cozy cottage! Yes, it is right beside the owner's home but they don't bother you at all! If there are any issues or questions, they are really great about fixing whatever it is. We fully enjoyed the space and location!

    Alison2019-03-16T00:00:00Z
  • If you are looking for a place in the greater Richmond area this is it! The cottage is an absolute gem hidden away down a long dirt driveway; secluded yet 5 minutes to a country store or a coffee spot and only 20 minutes from Richmond. Ray and Elizabeth were both more than accommodating. They even checked in with us during a high wind thunderstorm, and had the fridge stocked with goodies! If I could give more than 5 stars I would. Thank you!

    Christopher 2017-08-20T00:00:00Z
  • Believe the hype. Ray has gone out of his way to make this cottage a real home-away-from-home. It has everything one could want straight from the get-go, plus it's quiet, private, and on a beautiful property in a great neighborhood. In addition to the basic amenities, there's a home theater system (including 5.1 Dolby surround, a large television, Bluray, and an Apple TV which plays very well with the wicked-fast wifi), equipped kitchen, laundry, books/board games/DVDs, backyard, fire pit and so on. Other things such as the welcome folder, lamp dimmers, salt rock lamps, and nest thermostat were all really nice touches. On top of that, Ray, while remaining polite and unobtrusive, was always just a moment away in case we needed anything. We loved our stay and were sad to leave. Thank you for having us!

  • Very clean and peaceful location. The home is beautiful and big. Cameras and key-pad locks on most doors. My daughter and I felt very safe. Mitch was very kind and accessible. Highly recommend this stay.

    Lauren2019-09-01T00:00:00Z
  • Mitch was a great host with very good communication. His home was lovely and very clean. Great value and very close to Kings Dominion. The room was clean and comfortable with everything we needed for our stay. The bathroom met our needs very well. We didn't use much of the kitchen but it was nice that we could store some food in there. Overall we had a very nice time and we highly recommend Mitch. We will stay here again if we're ever in the area.

  • Mitch was a very gracious and hospitable host! My husband and I spent most of our days at Kings Dominion less than ten minutes away, but we appreciated being able to return to a safe, secure, and comfortable space at night. Mitch was very generous with his time and space and we couldn't recommend him more!

    Mercy2019-05-27T00:00:00Z
  • Mitch was kind and accommodating and the space was comfortable and clean. Everything was great. Just know that the house is a bit difficult to find if you are arriving after dark!

    Natalie2019-07-14T00:00:00Z
  • It was great! Mitch was a great host friendly and his hospitality was on point. We came for a competition, he provided water bottles for us, offered advice and flexible with check in and check out times.

    Tieumi2018-12-01T00:00:00Z
  • Staying with Mitch worked out great. I was driving my mom (a "snowbird") home to New England from Florida, and needed a place to stay near Richmond. We knew we were going to get in pretty late, but Mitch said, "no problem, I'll be up when you get here." We arrived around 10:30 pm and Mitch welcomed us in, showed us our room, and helped my mom figure out how to use the new TV and sound system. He was super nice and really put my mom at ease (she had never used AirBnB before). Mitch's place is close to 95, and offers an affordable, friendly place to stay!

    Christa2019-03-23T00:00:00Z

  • Great hostess that made coordinating a tricky stay very easy. House had everything we needed and was very comfortable.

    Carter2018-09-28T00:00:00Z
  • We had the most amazing experience at the cottage at Walnut Shade! As we arrived, there were a dozen deer out in the field and bunnies running around in the yard. It was so quiet and relaxing to sit on the adorable porch and watch all of the animals and nature around us. The property is beautiful and was such a peaceful place for us to spend a couple days. Everything was immaculate and all of the furniture and amenities in the home were new, clean, and fresh. It is such a unique home with so much character and coziness. We came with our toddler and the home was very child-friendly and comfortable. We had everything we needed to cook in the home. There were plenty of linens and everything we needed in the bathroom. Martha Ellen was extremely hospitable and welcoming. She had an awesome book that included all of the information we needed to know and a variety of activities and events we could participate in the surrounding town. We went to 2 of the places from her suggestions in the book and had great experiences at both of those! We honestly had the best experience and look forward to hopefully coming back to enjoy this wonderful place! It was the perfect getaway for our family.

Located on "Fraternity/Sorority Row" on the Randolph-Macon College campus. A quaint Edwardian Era home; built in 1904, and the floors squeak. House listed in the Ashland Historic District, Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places. Amenities reflect a more gracious period. The host lives in a separate wing, and is always available for help and information. Cats stay in confined room.
Ashland is called the Center of the Universe, and this house is located only a stones throw from the most important place in the Center of the Universe: Randolph-Macon College. There is nothing modern about the house, but it is well lived in and exudes the feeling of years ago. A quiet, relaxing journey back in time. Upstairs 4 bedrooms & 2 full bathrooms. Bedrooms 1,2 & 3 have Xfinity TV service. Downstairs is a formal dinning room, parlor, library, half bath, full kitchen with adjoining Florida room. Swimming pool & patio. Historic Town of Ashland and Hanover County have many quaint and interesting places to visit. A walk down our lovely sidewalks past picturesque old commercial buildings and beautifully maintained homes reminds us of the rich traditions of our past. There are wonderful restaurants, country inns, bed and breakfasts, and shops of all kinds and a wealth of history in both the Town of Ashland and Hanover County. And the City of Richmond is only a 15 minutes highway trip and Williamsburg and Charlottesville are only 45 minutes away.
The College Avenue neighborhood has elegant older houses circa late 1800's and early 1900's. There are flowers and beautiful trees and shrubbery everywhere.

  • Nelson is a great host and the air bnb is charming and comfortable! Thanks for the great place to stay!!

    Lora2017-12-15T00:00:00Z
  • Historic home in downtown Ashland. Perfect location for walking the downtown area. Coffee service greeted us every morning as well as a daily newspaper for our reading pleasure. Ample kitchen, provided us use of refrigerator, stove, etc. Linens and towels in perfect condition and bathrooms very clean. Nice pool area even though we didn't get a chance to use it due to our time restraints. Pool towels were even offered. Parking onsite, felt safe there. Mr. Nelson very accommodating (over and above) when we discovered a relative that we hadn't seen in 5 years disclosed a cat allergy. Mr. Nelson relocated all the cats to his quarters for the duration of our stay. How's that for stellar customer service!

  • We had a wonderful time in Ashland! Nelson's home is in an amazing location, walking distance to the college. And he was a terrific host. We truly enjoyed our conversations with him, learning the rich history of the college! The house was perfect for our group - two couples and a child. We will definitely return!

    Nancy2017-10-29T00:00:00Z
  • Very accommodating and the place was centralized to everything we needed. Rustic B&B feel to the house.

  • Great little house, can't beat the price! May have missed it in the description, but didn't know he had cats. Even though they stayed in their own room you could smell them upstairs and from one bedroom it was pretty strong. Enjoyed our stay very much and would definitely recommend again.

This is a house that is perfect for a couple or individual who wants the comfort of a perfectly appointed cottage in a quiet Victorian-era Southern town. Near Richmond, Williamsburg and Charlottesville, but very uniquely Ashland.
This house has held many writers seeking a week of solitude. it is full of books, with lots of places and porches to sink into, a comfy chair in which to read, think, listen to music or take a nap. It is also perfect for parents visiting their children in college (Randolph Macon is in the town) or coming for the Christmas or other holidays.
Ashland is a small, lively college town (Randolph-Macon is nearby), that Ashland prides itself upon being genuinely friendly to strangers. One writer describes it as "a town that reminds you of the happy childhood you didn't have." Several good restaurants and one great one are within walking distance. It is becoming an arts community, with galleries, shops, and theater - live and film - nearby. Most people don't want to leave.
  • Had a very nice, quiet stay. Phyllis was there when I arrived and explained everything. Her place was as advertised. Nice quiet street in Ashland. Many quaint shops nearby but all close to mainstream shopping, nice combination.

    Michael2016-07-31T00:00:00Z
  • Most comfortable bed I've slept in away from home. Good selection of spices and other amenities as well as a very clean home.

  • It was our second time staying at this lovely cottage, which is perfect for our needs. It is in the lovely Southern town of Ashland, which is very charming and home to Randolph Macon College, which our daughter attends. I am sure we will be back!

  • I was in town for a week, doing research at the state archives and working on my current book project. The place was perfect for both. It was quiet and comfortable, an easy commute to the city, and perfectly peaceful for both relaxing and getting some work done. And Phyllis is a fantastic host.

    Ryan2019-06-09T00:00:00Z
  • The owner welcomed us with beautiful flowers from the garden and provided highlights about Ashland and the neighborhood. The cottage was cozy, quaint, and quiet. The bed was so comfortable! We enjoyed walks in the neighborhood and into Ashland. The fenced in backyard was a nice place to let our dog play while we enjoyed the back porch.

  • Phyllis was great. It was a lovely house. Ashland is cute town. I enjoyed my stay.

  • Melissa is a fabulous host in every way. Great house and top-notch hospitality.

    Beth2018-11-04T00:00:00Z
  • The space itself is beautiful and stylish. The bed was very comfortable and the shower had lots of hot water. Melissa left a nice bowl of fruit as well as cereal and protein bars, plus coffee and tea. It is walkable to the charming downtown area of Ashland and to Randolph Macon College. We look forward to staying there again!

  • My stay with Melissa and her family was a wonderful experience! This was my first time using Airbnb, so I was a bit nervous, but Melissa was warm and welcoming. She took an immediate interest in me as I am relocating to the area in the next few weeks from out of state and I was there to find a place to live. She gave me many helpful hints and she knows the town and Richmond very well as her family has lived in Ashland for generations. As for the rental, it is very comfortable and beautiful two-room setup with a private bathroom in between. It had everything I needed for the few days I stayed there including a small refrigerator, a microwave, a small table, all the dishes and cutlery you could possibly use, a very comfortable bed, and a small coffee pot (major necessity for the caffeine addicted). Ashland itself is an adorable town with good food and a a surprising night life. Live music can often be heard when driving through the center of town on the weekend evenings. You can get there by walking since it is about two blocks away from Melissa's place. Richmond is a quick 20-30 minute drive, so you can get there easily if you are looking for some time in a bigger city. I really enjoyed staying here and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a place to stay in the greater Ashland area.

  • Great space, comfy bed, and nice people. Cooper the dog is very friendly too!

  • A gem. Private, very comfortable, lots of space and light. Very appealing space, with large private living room in addition to bedroom. Lots of windows and many nice touches. Very peaceful. Terrific location, walking distance to great restaurants. Melissa was a terrific host. Can’t recommend highly enough.

  • Melissa is a first rate host, and it shows through the care she takes to ensure her guests' stay is as relaxing and comfortable as possible. My friend and I arrived much later than we anticipated due to highway congestion, and Melissa graciously offered to let us stay pass the check-out time, so we could be fully prepared for another long day on the road. I highly recommend anyone passing through Virginia to stay at Melissa's.

    Edward2017-08-22T00:00:00Z
  • We always love staying here!

    Wendy2019-09-02T00:00:00Z
  • Melissa and Anna were incredibly thoughtful and kind hosts, making sure we had everything we needed and more! The space inside and out was gorgeous, inspiring, and serene! The garden was so lovely! The space was private, cozy, and clean. The bed was also very comfortable! The location is perfect, as you feel like your in your own private oasis, but truly steps away from historic Ashland! We walked to dinner at "Caboose" which was delicious! We also enjoyed the farmers market in the morning! I would recommend this Airbnb 100 times over! Can't wait to return!

The Tinder Guest House is an 8 room unit with three bedrooms (queen beds) and 2 full baths. Includes a game room (foosball and shuffleboard), a reading room with a small library and an eating nook. The eating nook has a microwave, mini-refrig., a keurig coffee machine, a bagel toaster and a blender. Breakfast is included. Southern Hospitality at its best!
The Tinder Guest House is located in an historic building in downtown Ashland. It is filled with antiques and unique items, but has all the modern conveniences. Located on the second floor, the first floor features a craft brewery. Come and experience all that the Center of the Universe has to offer.
Ashland is a quiet town and is reminiscent of earlier times. Think Petticoat Junction and a Mayberry mix. People are friendly and there are a lot of town events: Ashland Street Parties four times a year, 4th of July Parade and Festivities, Light up the Tracks in December and more! Our historic 1930 era theatre has reopened and features current movies, classics, concerts and more! (And it is a block from the Guesthouse)
  • The Tinder House was the perfect spot for my family from out of town to stay at while in town for my wedding. They loved staying here and enjoyed everything Downtown Ashland has to offer!

  • Incredible experience and one of the most lovely little places I've stayed at!

    Tiago2016-02-16T00:00:00Z
  • Sharon's place is a unique experience and a wonderful stay. You cannot beat the location with the proximity to restaurants, shops, and places of interest. The place is clean, beds are comfortable, and there is plenty of room for groups to interact or have privacy. Consider this place when visiting Ashland.

    Stephen2018-06-24T00:00:00Z
  • Great, spacious, well-stocked place in Ashland. Sharon was a fantastic host who provided many suggestions to ensure we enjoyed our stay. This was a perfect place for our group of six. Highly recommend!

  • Great host, wonderful hospitality, tasty breakfast! Wish we could have stayed ! Thank you Sharon !

    Sanja2019-08-02T00:00:00Z
  • This is a very nice house with characters and the neighborhood is very quiet. Sharon is so nice that she gave me all the detailed driving directions and left the key to where I can easily find, as I arrived quite late in the evening. She left plenty of food and drink, and it's so tasty. I really enjoyed experience.thank you so much for your hospitality. Overall I will highly recommend to anyone.

    Oliver2015-10-13T00:00:00Z
  • Our stay at the Tinder Guest House was great. It's very spacious and loaded with character, and nestled right in the heart of the charming little town of Ashland. And Sharon was a great host, working with us when we had to reschedule as Hurricane Joaquin was threatening our trip. The only minor thing to be aware of is that there is not a kitchen per se, but rather a few small appliances (and a nice selection of snacks). We would definitely stay there again and I would not hesitate to recommend it to friends and family.

  • Gorgeous home in the country. A little hard to find at night! My room felt like I was in my own king size master bedroom! It was huge with my own bathroom and all. Very clean. Mitch was extremely accommodating for me and all the food I had to buy for my job. Great host!

Our family farm has too many empty spaces to love, inside and out. Help us fill them with new friends. Must love dogs!
Our home is tucked at the end of a safe, private drive with plenty of parking. The entire second floor is available for guests (4 large, cozy bedrooms, 2 full baths, and a coffee bar.) None of our pets go upstairs, but yours are welcome. You are also welcome to use the main kitchen, dining tables, den/TV, and all the peaceful porches. In the basement you'll find ping-pong, pool table, arts/crafts supplies, a den area with a TV/movies, plus a yoga room with a Peloton and light workout equipment. Right outside, you can visit the ponies, pick vegetables from the garden, swim in the pool, use the grill, fireplace, fire pit, hammock and all seating areas. The fields and trails are open for exploring, running, biking, stargazing, picnics, yoga, meditation, enjoyment!
We treasure our tiny train town. It’s just 15 miles from Richmond but seems worlds away.
  • Wendy's place was absolutely amazing! Wendy is so nice and friendly and was extraordinary communicative. She made check in easy and was super willing to accommodate our request for an early check in. The farm is also just GORGEOUS! We spent the day in the pool playing fetch with one of Wendy's dogs. (All the dogs are just so sweet.) The rooms and bathrooms are all clean, spacious, and kept nice and cool. The bed was super comfortable and I slept like a rock. Great stargazing at the farm as well. :) Highly recommend Wendy's place if you want a luxurious getaway from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Ashland is a cute town and Wendy's farm is close to Richmond as well if you're looking for more to do.

  • These ladies are simply the best. So warm and inviting- the house and decor are absolutely incredible... and the dogs were just as sweet as could be!! We absolutely enjoyed our stay and recommend them 100%!

    Ramon2018-08-19T00:00:00Z
  • This space was amazing. There was a ton of space in the upstairs area, but the hosts let us use the rest of the house as well. My girls and I had a wonderful time. Hallie and Wendy were amazing hosts, only wish we could have stayed longer. Cannot recommend them enough!

    Vivian2019-05-12T00:00:00Z

    Dave2018-06-17T00:00:00Z
  • WoW! When I first arrived Wendy was finishing up her chores in the barn. It gave me a chance to take a deep breath and let the beauty of this place sink in. I was greeted by the chickens and well mannered dogs. Just a mere brush by to make their presence known. Wendy finished up and I was waiting on the rest of the girls for our girls night so she offered to start a fire in the pit. It was perfect. I could have just stayed right there the rest of the evening. Watching the dogs run and play in the field and warmth of the fire and chatting with Wendy was just what the Dr ordered. The rest of our stay was filled with laughter and perfect atmosphere. The house was well stocked with charm and beds.....the beds had the perfect weight of blankets. The plush towels sealed the deal with perfection. All the girls agreed we want to come back in the summer so we can create more memories around the pool and hot tub. Actually, I was trying to figure out a way to never leave when Wendy offered and shared a piece of quiche she had picked up at a local restaurant Suzanne’s. Hope this helps and you enjoy your stay as much as we did.

    Brooke2018-04-06T00:00:00Z
  • Great hosts and space! My 8 yr old twin girls and I wanted a relaxing place where we could swim and let our doggie run free and we got exactly that. Our private upstairs space was perfect (super comfy beds) and our time by the pool was just what we wanted. We loved the animals, and swimming with Ziggy the Golden Retriever was a highlight of our whole summer. I highly recommend this place to anyone or any family wanting to get away from it all for a little bit. (But still close to town) I think my dog misses it already! And my girls want to go back. Thanks for a memorable trip Wendy & Grace (and all the awesome pups and horses)
