About your host

Hi! I'm Matt, a "neu Berliner" and history guide living in the beating heart of Berlin Neukölln since 2016. This tour is about experiencing Berlin and its history the way I like to experience it: on a bike! We will get away from the typical tourist areas and instead learn about the city's past by exploring some of the more local places known and beloved by Berliners today. We rent all of our…

What we’ll do

Outside many "traditional" guidebooks are places pivotal to the story of Berlin during the 20th century and before. To explore this history for ourselves, and its overlap with the present day, we'll rent up-cycled bikes from a local youth project here in my neighborhood, and then set off on our tour. First up: Tempelhof Airport — now a gigantic park and symbol of Berlin's open and free culture —…

What else you should know

Please come on time, dress for the weather and bring money for snacks/drinks. The route is mostly flat, and we'll go slow, but be prepared to cycle up to 10 km. Bike helmets available upon request.

What I’ll provide

Bicycle
I'll provide the bikes :-) When we’re done, you can keep the bike for the rest of the day to explore the city on your own (there is also an opportunity to rent overnight from our bike partners, for a small extra fee). You can also return the bikes right after the tour if you prefer!
Safety equipment
Bike helmets are available upon request. Let me know if you need a helmet and we can arrange this in advance.

What to bring

Comfortable clothing suited to weather conditions
Water
Sunscreen (if you need it)
Money for any food/drink stops (cash is king in Germany)

Where you'll be

We’ll explore Berlin's history starting in Tempelhof Airport, a living symbol of the city's evolution and endurance. We'll stop in a historic Bohemian village located in the middle of busy Neukölln, before making our way to the imposing Soviet World War II memorial in Treptower Park. As we cross from West to East, we’ll pass the unassuming site of a once implacable boundary. All the while, I’ll be offering insights and background.
