What you'll do

When you tell your friends you are kayaking The LA River, do they respond: "The one in "Chinatown" and "Grease"? The river without water? This is not "that" river. Well, not that part. Navigate two miles of Los Angeles' hidden waterway in a truly unique way: kayak it! While you can watch Dunaway or Travolta from your dry living room, lets get off the couch and feel as if in Thailand, 'Nam, Florida . . . or "another LA." Depending on the guest count we may have options of an inflatable tandem kayak, a solo inflatable or hard shells. Coast through calm water, ending at a mini-waterfall where the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant and Lake Balboa feed into the river. It's monitored by Heal the Bay and Federal and local city governments for water quality. Guess the river's length! Specifics: 1. Bird watch where we've spotted great blue herons, osprey, snow egrets, and cormorants. 2. See edible cattail; fig trees, hemlock, willow and cottonwood. 3. Converse about the history and city's plans for development. Learn what architect is on board to redevelop the river (no Googling).

As a native Angeleno and trained kayak guide, let's enjoy our city's hidden waterway together. You can brag about it later where most people only know about the river as concrete. I am a white water kayaker on the Kern River. I also grew up near our kayaking spot.

What's included

Where you'll be

Start at the Sepulveda Basin Rec. point of entry where birds fish and nest; and continue under the light and water patterns of the Burbank Blvd. bridge. Passing through flora and fauna, and calm waters, about halfway, traverse through "Little Grand Canyon" (early morning look out for hares). Then we stop at 'Pebble Beach' to stretch and talk. We end at The Tillman Water Recreation Plant & Lake Balboa water fall. We return the same way.
