What you'll do

Join me to hear tales of the spies that populated Georgetown. These movers and shakers shaped WWII and post-war policy, with a heavy focus on U.S. - Soviet relations. Learn more about the origins of the CIA, the persistent tension between CIA and FBI, and spies who sold U.S. and Soviet secrets. We'll visit the homes of William "Wild Bill" Donovan, Alan Dulles, Roald Dahl, and Alger Hiss and see places linked to the espionage activities of Elizabeth Bentley, Vitaly Yurchenko, Edward Snowden and today's top spies. We'll talk about Cold War-era games of smoke and mirrors between the U.S. and the Soviets. Do these games continue to play out in current U.S. - Russia relations? Along the way, participants will be asked to put on their spy hats and consider the role of surveillance in an operative's daily life. I sprinkle in (cleared) insider stories from my days at the CIA and can speak to a variety of other themes depending on your interests, including (but not limited to): Becoming a Intelligence Operative; Being Female in the Intelligence World; Teaming with Outside Agencies to Advance a Common Mission and; HUMINT in a Tech-centric World.

Rosanna

Hi. I'm Rosanna, a member of the Atlas Obscura community. I'm a 15-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency’s Directorate of Operations and bring this experience to bear in my spy-themed offerings. Visitors will be treated to an insider's perspective (and stories!) while exploring and learning more about the espionage history of Washington D.C.'s neighborhoods and landmarks. I'm also a lifelong resident, licensed tour guide, and member of the Guild of Professional Tour Guides of Washington D.C. I served multiple tours overseas in South Asia, Europe, and Latin America working recruitment and hard target operations. Most notably, I represented CIA in interagency meetings on crime and narcotics issues. I've also supported Agency leadership from the 24-hr Operations Center. Welcome!

Where you'll be

This 1.5 hr walking tour begins in northwest Georgetown and crosses over Wisconsin Ave. to northeast Georgetown and then south towards M Street. We spend most of the tour away from the hustle and bustle of Wisconsin Ave. and M Street, in quieter neighborhoods that have remained timeless. Please note we will end at Martin's Tavern on Wisconsin, away from the starting point.
