What you'll do

Step aboard our classic white eco friendly sailing boat. No noise, no nasty diesel fumes. Our skipper will help make your trip memorable aboard the vessel that has proudly entertained visitors to the region since 1982.

After a safety briefing we leave the marina at the beginning of the mighty Waikato River and work our way along the bays of Lake Taupo with an informative and interesting short history of the area, it’s volcanic nature and cultural history.

Either sit back and relax on our comfortable seating or have a turn at the wheel. Refreshments like tea coffee or milo ( a kiwi favourite) are available on the trip. Grab a drink and get to know the people around you.

As we sail you will enjoy the majestic view of our volcanic mountains, Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro. In the Winter they are snowcapped like ice cream cones.

Sail Barbary takes you right up close to the face of Ngatoroirangi, for the perfect photo of the 14-metre high rock art, only accessible by water. The skipper will tell you the story of its carving.

In the summer we stop for swimming.

We are a truly unique and authentic experience. the only sustainable sailing company on the lake.

Chris is a humorous character with the same qualifications as Peter. He has extensive offshore racing experience. Which means when he isnt working he is sailing for fun.

Kerry has been sailing all his adult life. He has sailed all around the world. He is very experienced in open ocean and competition sailing. He has some fabulous stories to tell.

Where you'll be

The Mine Bay Maori Rock Carvings are only accessible by water. Sail Barbary will take you up close to the face of Ngatoroirangi for the perfect photo of the 14-metre high rock art. The main carving is the face of an 800 year old ancestor. It is surrounded by smaller sculptures depicting ancestors and kaitiaki (guardians). It was carved in 1981 using traditional designs and techniques.

Fantastic skipper, friendly and made us feel part of the team, some of us were able to do some hands on sailing tasks , great value for money. Free coffee, hot chocolate and snacks on board to minimize the cold winter. I will do it again during the Summer time to enjoy another face of the sailing experience. this was a surprise birthday event I organised for my husband and he loved it, well.. WE loved it!

They yacht was great and it was a nice couple of hours out and about on the lake. However once at the carvings in the rock the skipper gave a very one sided version of New Zealand history which was in my opinion very unprofessional and showed the ignorance of the operator of the vessel. But he did stop and let us go for a swim which was very refreshing and ended the trip on a good note.

Fantastic trip! Our skipper Chris was very knowledgeable and gave us a lot of information about the history of the lake. The wonderful boat trip experience was equally matched by Chris's enjoyable and entertaining commentary. Thank you for a memorable afternoon on the lake. I will be back.

Lovely afternoon out on Lake Taupo. Great rock carvings to see unfortunately lack of wind meant we didn’t do any sailing without motoring.
