What you'll do

I’ll show you around the Saúde neighborhood (Little Africa) and teach you about its complex history. The area is really rich in cultural diversity and this has had a huge impact on musical traditions. Incorporating elements from African music was one of the key elements in developing the world-famous rhythm of Samba music. While we explore, I’ll tell you the fascinating story of how an entire genre was created in this one tiny part of the city. You’ll learn just how it grew to be an essential part of Brazil’s culture. The last stop will be at Pedra do Sal - Salt Stone, with a local outdoor live music of Samba. It´s our authentic local experience that happens every monday and friday.

What's included

Drinks
Caipirinha Just before the Samba begins, I will provide one free Caipirinha—a Brazilian cocktail made with cachaça, sugar,…

Carlos

I graduated from law school and worked for five years as a tax consultant at a big firm dealing with expats from all over the world. Back in 2012, I decided to quit and follow my dream of opening up a hostel. I ran my own for a few years and realized just how much I love welcoming travelers into my country, sharing Brazilian culture with them, and introducing them to the best spots in Rio. And now, after getting a tour guide licence and graduate from a MBA of Rio de Janeiro City History, I am more ready than ever to show my city to all of you in a fun and knowledgeable way.

Where you'll be

We’ll visit the Cais do Valongo—or “Valongo wharf”—and learn about the area’s important history. We will end up in Pedra do Sal, meaning “rock of salt,” which is considered the birthplace of Samba in Rio de Janeiro. On Mondays and Fridays, it’s a great place to catch live Samba performances, too.
