What you'll do

We'll start with a visit with our dairy cow, Harper. We'll feed her her favorite treats, like our farm grown apples and tomatoes, and we'll brush and pet her. After our visit with Harper, we'll spend some time with the hens, roosters and ducks. We'll feed them organic hen scratch and farm greens, if available. We'll watch them happily scratch around and quack and coo. While the birds are busy, we'll step into their coops to collect eggs, and we'll compare the various types, shapes, colors and sizes. After our visit with the birds, we'll meet and greet our goats and sheep. We'll feed them their favorite treat of sweet cob, and we'll pet and brush them. If it's lamb season, we'll visit with and hold the baby lambs. We'll then head to the garden and orchard for a brief stroll to see what may be ripe for picking. We'll observe the myriad life thriving in the garden, including the birds, bees, dragonflies, ladybugs, and more. After our garden walk, you'll have the opportunity to suit up to meet our honeybees. We'll observe them through a peek-a-boo window in their hive, we'll pull a frame to observe the comb, and depending on the bees' activity, we may inspect the deep hive for the queen. We'll finish our experience in the barn with a calm and relaxing visit with our bunnies. We'll hold, brush and cuddle with these sweet and soft fur balls.

Your hosts

I dreamed of farming since I was a little girl but lost my way in corporate America until about 10 years ago, when I remembered my path. I began with chickens and gardening, and eventually, The Nest Box was born, a humane, transparent and bio-diverse farm where guests can reconnect with our animals and earth. Allie has been actively pursuing ways for people to connect with their ecosystems and food-systems for the last decade. In her pursuit she became obsessed with soil building for the health of ecosystems and to store carbon. Now she likes to think of herself as a "soil flipper" -- taking dirt or lifeless soil, and building it up to be teeming with life. Her role as a gardener and farmer stems from this excitement and passion. Matt grew up on a Midwestern farm and joins The Nest Box in finding best ways to quickly "flip soil."
