What you'll do

We plan to leave the busy Santa Marta behind for a few days by starting the journey traveling northeast arriving at a remote desert village on the sea of Colombia's northern tip. This seaside village and the entire Guajira peninsula is home to the indigenous Wayuu people. The peninsula was the first place ever visited by Europeans on their quest to the South American continent. For the Wayuu, this is a sacred place since they believe it is the place where the souls of all the deceased travel to rest with the ancestors, as the gate to afterlife. We will be spending the rest of the afternoon in this village, exploring the sights, swimming in the turquoise waters and sharing traditional meals with our host families. At the break of dawn the next day, we will continue our adventure even further north off-road on 4x4 truck. By mid-day we'll be reaching South America's northernmost point. We'll climb over the sand dunes and swim in Colombia's most beautiful desert beaches. For our second night, we will remain in this remote desert region. This area is also well known to have the darkest sky full of stars at night. After some day and night adventures we'll take a rest at our accommodation in the village before starting our return journey on the third day.

Keep in mind that La Guajira region is very undeveloped so we should be prepared with extra water. Packing light is a good idea and bring comfortable cool clothes for the desert. Hot in the day, Cold at night.
