What you'll do

Meeting at the Scout Hall on Brighton Rd we will set off on foot around Dowse Lagoon. On route we will encounter opportunities for birdwatching, and I will share information about the plant and animal life, climate, historical uses and associations with the township of Sandgate. The Aboriginal and colonial history of Sandgate is interwoven into these stories. Binoculars and field guides will be provided.

Leanne

All of my life I have been a nature lover, seeking out green spaces wherever I am, and learning about the natural world. In Sandgate I am lucky to be surrounded by nature reserves of international significance, so I have been spoilt without even having to leave home. I am a contributing writer for the Sandgate Guide, covering topics about the environment, natural history, and conservation. History captivates me too, probably due to an appreciation of the ingenuity and resourcefulness of our forebears. Our local Historical Society and Museum has been a great source of knowledge.

Where you'll be

Dowse Lagoon is recognised as a wetland of international significance, forming part of the Moreton Bay site in the Ramsar Agreement. It is also one of the most accessible reserves, sitting in the centre of the suburb of Sandgate, and offers easy walking on paved surfaces for the entire circuit of 1500 metres. We will stop at two bird hides and numerous other places of interest along the way.
