What you'll do
First, we will judge from your experience where to begin and team you up with the appropriate expert and translator. Our general basketry introduction uses a miniature rattan but if you prefer experience in another medium, you can let us know that as well. We do bamboo, water hyacinth, banana leaf and many more. Teaching will be in 3-4 hour increments with water and overhead fan provided, working outside under one of our basket huts with other weavers in direct contact. The initial goal for beginners will be to understand how to prep raw material, create and finish a basic basket and weave in the 3-4 hours provided, and be able to take this home with you. From this, you will appreciate forever the efforts that go into every basket and your trip to Cambodia will include direct contact with the hardest working and most positive people you can imagine. Additional basket making courses can continue for those that desire. We have taught some visitors for up to two weeks in different mediums and styles. If you have your own ideas or goals, please come and let us know and we will be glad to accommodate!
Tom Yesberger came in 1996 to a Cambodia devastated by war and with almost no infrastructure, and within days and without planning started BOC from the hundreds of people in the countryside who showed up on short notice. We all have been working since to learn about the best techniques and materials needed to make 'Baskets you can be proud of!' - our logo. Srey Mao, our Asst Mgr and Co-Host will be teaching. She has risen from utter poverty and a hard life to being the go-to basket person in Cambodia - having helped supply tens of thousands of locations worldwide - one baskets at a time.
If you wish, have lunch with our workers onsite - mostly rice, with vegetable and a little meat. Contribution is up to you.
Each participant will be provided with one natural coconut drink and unlimited cold clean water during their visit.
Transportation to visit outlying villages and producers is provided as an additional option. Total time needed- at least 4 h
Where you'll be
The initial morning program takes place at our picturesque villa next the north river road in Siem Reap - but always under cover in the shade. If you would like, additional time may be scheduled for tours to the countryside which includes visiting those who work for BOC from home and where you can also purchase baskets directly from those who make them - these tours can be from 3 hours to a full day as desired.
