What you'll do

Create your very own rock! Each guest will be given a flat ceramic tile (as a solid base build the rock on), metal support frame, 1/4" hardware cloth, twisting wire, small plastic bucket, pointing trowel, brush, and gloves. We'll start by working on attaching the hardware cloth to the wire frame with the wire pieces. Our rocks will be formed into roughly their final shape at this stage. Once this step is complete, we'll mix up a batch of mortar mix and apply the first coat of mortar mix to the wire armature. This fast-setting mixture will harden in about 30-45 minutes. We'll then apply the second and final coat of mortar mix immediately following the first coat. There will be two separate mixtures colored in two different tones which will help create a more natural-looking rock. Once we’re done with the final coat, we'll break for lunch. I'll then do a demo on how to carve and weather the rock. We’ll spend some time carving cracks into our rocks and brushing the surface to erode it. At the end, everyone will get to take home their newly created rock!

Learn more about Justin

Justin

Ten years ago I had my first bout of working with cement as an artistic medium when I created a 12,000 gallon koi pond featuring two six-foot tall cascading waterfalls. I hand-mixed 480 bags of 80-pound concrete mix to create the pond. In 2016, it was featured in the Seattle Times. Since then, I have continued to hone the skill of creating realistic-looking faux rocks. I'm an avid gardener and while my interest of building faux rocks stemmed from my desire to create an immersive and captivating garden, this hobby has become a pursuit in and of itself.
