What you'll do
Experience the city that brought us Søren Kierkegaard The philosopher Søren Kierkegaard is one of the strangest figures Copenhagen has seen, and is undoubtedly one of the greatest minds to come out of this city as well as being a world-renowned philosopher! Born and raised in the capital, Kierkegaard (1813-1855) felt most at home walking the streets he knew better than most, talking to vendors, craftsmen and the ordinary people. On this walking tour in Copenhagen, you'll get the story of Kierkegaard's childhood, his growing up, his faith and philosophy, his struggles, mistakes and not least his unrequited love for Regine – to whom he dedicated his life’s work. The Copenhagen that Kierkegaard knew was quite different from today. With no sewerage, thousands of cows, pigs and horses, hundreds of thousands of rats – Copenhagen was known as one of the dirtiest cities in Europe. And yet it was: “Big enough to be a major city, small enough that there is no market price on human beings.” You don’t need to be a philosopher to join this tour. If you enjoy a good story or just want to learn about Copenhagen’s history, this might be the tour for you.
After a decade of teaching history, Danish and social studies, in 2014 I decided to quit my job and start doing what I always loved the most – telling stories and sharing my passion for this wonderful city of mine. Though I know every inch of the city, there is still new discoveries every day – and new, curious people to engage with. Kierkegaard has had a profound effect on my own life, not least the story of his life and his struggles to get to grips with his family history and his emphasis on making choices in life. I am no philosopher, but I know his thinking well enough to comfortably say like his rolemodel Socrates: "... I know nothing". But every tour makes me wiser... I have five experiences on Airbnb. How about a tour of the emerging district at the old Carlsberg brewery: https://www.airbnb.dk/experiences/404128
We'll stop for refreshments along the way. A hot or cold beverage is included in the price.
Danish weather can be unpredictable. I always bring enough umbrellas for everyone.

Where you'll be
We'll meet at the stairs in front of the City Court House, right next to Kierkegaards birthplace, and visit the places he lived and worked during his short life. This tour takes us to some of the most iconic sights of the city, such as the main cathedral "Vor Frue" church, the "secret" Grey Friars square (Gråbrødre torv) and the wonderful Royal Library garden. Some of the stops - especially during winter season, will be indoors.
