What you'll do

I'm going to help you connect with the forest in a beautiful riparian canyon with a year-round waterfall. We'll look up and around to take in the natural wonders, instead of looking down at our phones. My role as a guide is to help you slow down and awaken your senses. Through a series of carefully crafted invitations, we'll reconnect with ourselves and the land on a deeper level. The forest bathing walk we'll take is a mindful practice inspired by the Japanese Shinrin-yoku. The practice is scientifically proven to reduce stress, boost your immune system, and improve mood and mental focus. We'll pause periodically to share our "golden nuggets" with each other and to bask in the knowing of being witnessed and acknowledged. We'll end the walk with a tea ceremony featuring foraged plants in the forest and some healthy snacks. Then I'll show you how to make "Jiaozi"—Chinese dumplings. This will be a cooking show that features each of us as a chef who will get to eat his or her own cooking—eight mouthwatering vegetarian Jiaozi. There will be no pressure for performance as we'll enjoy the slow and meditative way of making this wonderful food.

Jackie

I’m a certified nature and forest therapy guide and mentor with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs. I love guiding people for an immersive experience in the forest, and coming out feeling relaxed and revitalized. I also love teaching others how to make Chinese dumplings. I was born and raised in rural China. I spent a lot of time outdoors as a child, helping my grandmother gather firewood and following my grandfather around as he raised buffaloes. I came to the United States as a PhD candidate in 1990 and made Los Angeles my home after completing my studies.

Where you'll be

We'll do a slow wander for less than a mile with several pauses for invitations/exercises before ending at a waterfall. There are a couple of stream crossings and a gentle slope upward. We'll have plenty of time to immerse ourselves among the trees and take in such wonders as the soothing sound of water, the fresh scent of plants, and the playful sight of birds or squirrels.
