What you'll do

The Dogs of Chernobyl program treats the descendants of dogs that were abandoned after the 1986 nuclear disaster. These animals face hard lives in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, constantly fighting for basic necessities like food, water, and shelter during the harsh Ukrainian winters.

During your virtual visit we will meet and feed some of the abandoned dogs who live at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. You will learn about our mission and history treating these incredible animals. After meeting some of the dogs, we will visit the scene of the disaster at the Unit 4 reactor.

Your interactive virtual visit allows you to see an environment where people have been prevented from living for over three decades. We will be spending most of our time with the beautiful four-legged friends that roam the power plant and providing them with food. Feel free to bring your curiosity and questions. You will learn about the history of the region, the nuclear power plant, and the work that is currently happening at Chernobyl.

This Experience is great for team-building. Looking to reconnect with your colleagues and teammates while working from home? Send me a message!

My name is Lucas Hixson, and I along with my co-founder Erik Kambarian, first came to Chernobyl over 5 years ago. My background is as a radiation specialist and before coming to Chernobyl, I monitored environmental contamination in the United States.

In 2016, Erik and I founded Clean Futures Fund, a U.S. non-profit organization that supports the workers at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant and affected communities. In 2017, Erik and I started the Dogs of Chernobyl program, in the last 3 years we have vaccinated and sterilized over 1,500 animals. In 2018 we received permission from the Ukrainian government to begin rescuing and adopting puppies from the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone to forever homes in the United States and Canada. To date we have adopted over 40 puppies.

This was a great opportunity to see a unique place that most of us cannot visit, and to learn more about the work being done by a specific organization. The host shared a lot of great insight into the lives of the Chernobyl dogs, as well as the people who lived in the exclusion zone in 1986. I found this experience completely worth it and was pleased the fee supports their activities. I highly recommend!

A few months ago, I signed up for the Feeding the Dogs of Chernobyl experience and enjoyed Lucas' presentation so much that I signed up to take the course a second time today--and am so glad I did. Lucas shared many new and meaningful stories about the dogs and the people of Chernobyl, and I felt as though I was hearing part 2 of a bigger story that my heart had been longing to hear. Lucas is an excellent speaker, and he welcomes and answers participant questions very thoughtfully. Thank you for offering this great experience again! Kathy

After seeing the series of Chernobyl, we had an increased interest in what had happened to the people and animals after the disaster. Lucas brought a great insight into the subject area as a whole, and how the dogs were treated in the past, the present and the future. He really cares about the dogs and this shines through when greeting them, and how he knows the names instantly and the warmth they show. Lucas made a great effort to get to know us at the start of the virtual experience and we were encouraged to ask questions throughout the experience. Would highly recommend this tour. You won't be disappointed.

If you are thinking about booking this experience...do it! Beyond the HBO series, I really didn't have much knowledge about Chernobyl. But thanks to Lucas, I feel as if I know a lot more. He fills the unique experience with knowledge and personal stories. I loved getting to "meet" all of the dogs..I miss them already!

The Dogs of Chernobyl experience was awesome. Lucas is extremely knowledgeable -- and its obvious that the locals and dogs know and trust him, too! I loved getting a glimpse into the life on Chernobyl power plant for these dogs and getting to "meet" some of the dogs in person. Their personalities and kindness came through Zoom, as did Lucas'. Loved every minute (... especially the minutes with dogs!).

Lucas was a fabulous host. Passionate, knowledgeable, friendly. His scientific background makes him someone you hear; his friendly and human nature makes him someone you listen to. What a fantastic way to learn more about a place you would/could never normally visit.
