What you'll do

To be a poet is to create an oasis for those you love and those you’ll never meet. Some of history’s most celebrated poets have served as organizers, judicial overseers, scientists, theologians, philosophers, and healers. Poetry is an art of energy and attention focused by admiration. The times we live in complicate our ability to focus energy and attention. In this class, we make time for aesthetic exploration, community, and inspiration through poetic meditation and guided writing exercises. You'll get to share your own work if you would like to do so, and you'll also hear work from some of my favorite queer poets. We’ll discuss their various themes and influences. If you would like to do so, I will help you explore some of the basics of writing poetry and create your own poem.

Learn more about Jo

Jo

I am a poet and community organizer from rural Oregon. I've been curating immersive public art experiences for the last ten years. I currently serve as the poet in residence for Portland Parks and Rec and am the founder and creative director of a non-profit queer artist collective called Future Prairie. I am interested in spiritual philosophies and their intersection with culture, media, and community placemaking. My approach is rooted in a reverence for nature and is inclusive of various schools of thought: Abrahamic faiths, modern mental health research, Shintoism, myths, physics, and more. As a White person, I tend to draw inspiration for this class from personal histories with Celtic and Norse paganism, although I am interested in all traditions and love to learn from my students and collaborators from many different backgrounds.
