What you'll do
We'll go on a private charter cruise through the Kildare countryside on a lovingly restored traditional canal barge that's licensed for 12 passengers. On the 2.5 hour cruise to Digby Lock and back you'll see nature and wildlife up close and experience the built heritage of the historic waterway. The trip included passage through a 250 year old canal lock. Sallins is where trade on the Grand Canal first began in 1779 and you'll learn about the history and life on the historic waterway as we meander along past Soldiers Island, over the Leinster Aqueduct and through Digby Lock.

Where you'll be
The Leinster Aqueduct was built in 1783 and carries the Grand Canal over the river Liffey west of Sallins. We'll stop at the aqueduct to get off to have a better look and I'll tell you about how they built it, and how it was crucial to the development of trade on the Grand Canal. Will ascend through Digby Lock and you'll experience the inner workings of a 232 year old manual canal lock. Some great options for food afterwards in Sallins village.
