What you'll do

Departing from Athlone, throgh the lock gates heading south passing the The Meadows on the west side where you will see Moorhen, Little Grebe, Mute Swan, Coot and Grey Heron. The peat bogs which surround the river are home to an abundance of flora and fauna, and is preserved as a natural habitat to the now rare corncrake. Approaching Clonmacnoise by river is simply majestic- Clonmacnoise is an ancient monastic site . A walk amongst the peaceful stone ruins of this famous place will conjure images of the saints and scholars of Ireland’s renowned Golden Age of learning. Founded by St Ciaran in the mid-6th century, it became a great centre of religion and learning. Visitors can see three high crosses, a cathedral, seven churches and two round towers. The beautifully preserved structures of Clonmacnoise Cathedral, Temple Doolin,Melaghlin will impress and leave those who visit Clonmacnoise with an authentic sense of the history of Ireland. After visiting the moanstic site, refreshments will be served on the boat before heading up river back to Athlone. Our final stop, Sean's Bar,the oldest pub in the world. There we will sample a Guinness,or an Irish Coffee,or a malt whiskey.
