It helps that I spent several years while an Army officer as an Assistant Professor of History at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. What we’ll do

After arriving at the Manassas National Battlefield Park, your host will orient you on the history leading up to the first major battle of the Civil War that took place there on 21 July, 1861. We'll then enter the Visitors Center to get an appreciation of the big picture from a terrain map of the region showing where major forces from each side were moving. What else you should know

Bring your own camera, sunscreen plus any water or snacks you wish to consume. Wear comfortable shoes for walking on grass. If you wish to ride to Matthews Hill and the Stone Bridge, bring your car.

Where you'll be

We will be at the Manassas National Battlefield Park on the actual ground where two major battles of the Civil War took place. You will be able to walk the very ground traversed by soldiers in this first momentous battle of the war and gain an understanding of the huge challenges faced by soldiers and leaders of both sides.

Guest requirements
