What you'll do

Meet at the boathouse for a short safety presentation at the shoreline, where you will be outfitted with safety gear before starting your adventure. Then, embark on a voyage filled with questions and conversation on how recreation can have a positive influence on improving and encouraging environmental awareness and activism in an urban setting. Paddle along the Gowanus Canal to see a hidden side of New York, including the underside of bridges and a transforming industrial neighborhood. Discover the fun of canoeing as you explore the history of this Brooklyn neighborhood’s rich past, present, and future.We will take a sunset cruise along the canal in a canoe.

Tim Gamble is an experienced kayaker and canoe paddler with many years of experience paddling in New York Harbor and is managing ticket sales. Owen Foote is an architect and urban planner an expert canoeist with extensive knowledge of and has been advocating for the Gowanus neighborhood for over 25 years. If he is not available, one of the guides he has trained will lead your experience.

About the organization

Gowanus Dregers Canoe Club

The Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club has been reviving the Gowanus Canal through Recreation, Education and Advocacy for over 20 years Our not for profit mission is to connect people with and to improve the canal and NY estuary. Where you'll be

The Gowanus Canal is a designated Superfund site and cleanup is underway. The legacy of pollution lingers but gentrification is changing the area, now with hip bars, excellent restaurants and fun recreational activities like canoeing, shuffleboard and axe throwing.
