About US Capitol Historical Society

Founded in 1962 and chartered by Congress in 1978, the U.S. Capitol Historical Society is a private, non-partisan, non-profit educational organization that communicates to the public the rich heritage of the U.S. Capitol Building and the U.S. Congress. The Society's mission is to bring the fascinating story of the Capitol, to people across the nation and around the world.

Learn about the history of the US Capitol building and why DC was chosen as the Nation's Capitol from the historical society. As we guide you around the perimeter of the Capitol, you'll learn about: the significance of each building, some fun facts, architectural insights, and infamous stories. Where you'll be

Volunteers trained by the Society lead visitors on an extensive tour around the Capitol exterior. You will be able to see the Senate Park, the West Front, the East Front Plaza, as well as other nearby sites.

Guest requirements

Up to 10 guests of all ages can attend. This tour is appropriate for children of all ages. Do keep in mind, however, that there is a moderate amount of walking and the tour lasts two hours.
