What you'll do
Every month local artist Rich Garr collages together an art-centric walking tour around the Gowanus Canal. Each one is unique, and mines the community's deep creative base to explore the past, present and future community. Art studio or gallery visits spice up the walk, and assist in understanding this rapidly evolving corner of NYC. Whether featured art is legal or not, painted or printed, tame or wild- it all has a place in this unique multi-sensory experience. Swoon, Mast, Wolf Tits and other renowned and street artists are featured, as are historical landmarks, architectural gems both new and old, hidden alternative art spaces, and the work of anonymous "green guerillas" and graffiti artists The walk leaves at 11am from the Gowanus Souvenir Shop, and ends 1.5 hours later at or near an appropriate local watering hole where further discussion (& drinks) are encouraged.
Rich Garr was born in Ohio in 1980 and grew up exploring, playing sports & making art. He attended college in the Bronx, then moved home for a few years. There he had his first art studio & solo show. He managed an apartment complex, studied more art & history, and worked on weekends at the Cleveland Museum teaching kids art. Upon returning to NYC he began work in the Brooklyn Museum- this time helping plan interdisciplinary programming. Freelancing followed, as did an art studio in Gowanus Brooklyn. He is currently embroiled in an battle to bridge the gap between his various creative output.
