What you'll do
In the UNESCO World Heritage site, just north of Princes Street, we will explore the largest Georgian planned town development in the world. Edinburgh's New Town's architectural status is unique in the world in terms of its size, monumentality and degree of preservation. Your architect - guide will also demonstrate New Town's international connections and influences. Who knew Edinburgh had so much in common with Rome, Athens and...Philadelphia? Through the masterplan by the young James Craig and buildings by celebrated British architects such as Robert Adam, we will unfold the cultural context of Scottish Enlightenment, as well as the economical and political influence of the union between Scotland and England. Further, we will soak in the neoclassical ornaments under the starlit dome of the most impressive banking hall in Europe. Then find one of the last remaining original mews that served the grand townhouses in the Georgian era. While walking the ordered, symmetrical grid of New Town streets lined with extravagant townhouses we will learn: what is the purpose of the sunken basements? Why Edinburgh won't clean its blackened sandstone facades? How did these magnificent iron streetlights originally function? For an exclusive insight into the chic Georgian lifestyle we will enter a private Georgian garden! (available only with us, or if your aunt lives on Queen street!
