What you'll do

Blacksmithing & Brews
Here’s your chance to experience the basics of shaping hot steel with a hammer and anvil in our unforgettable blacksmithing workshop. You’ll fire up the forge with our seasoned educator Mo, who’s been teaching hands-on living history at Earthshine for over sixteen years. He’ll guide you every step of the way, helping you work a piece of rough steel into a one of a kind, hand crafted knife form you can take home. You’ll stoke the coal fire, hammer glowing metal straight from forge, and learn all kinds of history, lore, techniques, and tricks about the craft.
After the workshop, you can enjoy a local brew on the front deck of our main lodge overlooking Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can take it easy, soaking up the mountain views while you sip, or work on refining your knife to transform its rugged, fresh-out-of-the-fire look to a smoother, cleaner finish. (We’ll provide the tools!)
No experience is needed and all equipment is provided. Ages 13+ are welcome, but you must be at least 21 to be served beer. If you’re under 21, we’ll provide root beer or sparkling water. Each person participating will take home their own wrought iron crude knife form that can be used as a letter opener or simple spreading utensil.

Guests need to wear closed-toed shoes for this experience.
Note: Class time is Eastern Standard Time.

Where you'll be

The living village at Earthshine Lodge was built as an educational village. Thousands of school age children have come through the "Pioneer Village" over the past 30 years to learn about North Carolina and American history. Kids are able to learn homesteading skills such as weaving, candle-making, blacksmithing, etc., by getting hands-on in the Pioneer Village. Now, adults can join in the fun with Blacksmithing & Brews.

What an incredible experience! The location is tucked away in the mountains and beautiful views. Mo did an amazing job walking us through the steps of blacksmithing. It wS cool to be apart of the experience in so many different ways. He really listens and works to complete your vision on your knife. Be prepared to get sweaty in the forge! The beers after were the perfect touch. Would recommend this experience to anyone!

This was super fun and we left with a beautifully crafted knife. Mo was a fantastic story teller and instructor, engaging, kind, patient, and enthusiastic. We will definitely be back with our kids next time!

Fun time with Mo forging our own knives and listening to history of the property and blacksmithing. Mo definitely made the experience fun and informative. The property is amazing and Matt and Jessie were super nice hosts. Beer on the porch with incredible views while putting finishing touches on the knives we just hammered out was a great way to cap off a wonderful experience!
