What you'll do

Discover Melbourne’s best living art galleries on this Laneways Running Tour. This small group tour explores Melbourne’s rich history, guiding runners through Melbourne’s famous laneways to visit some of the city’s most impressive landmarks. Along the way, your Melbourne city tour guide will share the story behind each building and alleyway.

This 8km running tour operates daily at 7am and 9am. We’ll begin our adventure at Federation Square, the city’s cultural hub and home to a variety of world-class events, restaurants, bars and speciality stores. Together, we’ll embark on a journey through Melbourne’s famous “laneways,” a term used to describe the narrow streets and pedestrian paths that weave in and out of the city’s Central Business District. Dating back to the 1835, these historic laneways are lined with unique street art and treasured eateries. Your tour guide leaves no stone unturned, leading you through Melbourne’s most hidden alleyways while sharing the stories of the not so savoury events that took place there long ago.

Around half way we'll stop for a snack and at the end we'll stop for coffee at one of Melbourne's best cafes.

I'm the founder of Fit City Tours and love nothing more than sharing this wonderful city with you. I've been running for over 10 years, and have 5 marathons under my belt..... but don't worry, we won't be running that far on this tour!

The wonderful team of Tim, Tony, Cayla, Jacqui, Charlotte, Miguel and myself look forward to sharing the best of Melbourne with you!

Great way to learn about the history of Melbourne's development. Not too strenuous. Good for working up an appetite for a special treat and coffee. Miguel adapted the tour well for my preferences. Thanks for all the tips on where to eat.

Charlotte was fantastic! She was so kind and friendly and her knowledge of the city’s history was great (especially for me who knew next to nothing about the city). The tour was amazing, such a fun way to explore and get to know somewhere new. I have lots of places I want to go back to and explore more that I wouldn’t have found otherwise. I loved the whole experience!

Not only was Matty's running tour fantastic, I got to learn a bit about his small business (he operates a lean running tour operation both in Melbourne and Sydney). He had some cool Melbourne insights and we stopped for delicious donuts. Would highly recommend his tour once travel restarts. It's more important than ever to support small businesses like his.

Tony was my guide and he was very good at setting the run to my pace! He also catered the tour to where wanted to go since I was a solo runner to the Queen Victoria Market which I very much appreciated. Gave a free drink at the end! Was great to be introduced to Melbourne this way, wouldn't have had a thorough introduction tour without this run!

Tim is gorgeous. He knows the city, loves the city, which made the tour really informative. It made me think of staying longer in this city! He also adjusted the pace from time to time to make the journey easy. I couldn’t have done it by myself.

This was a fun experience. Matty was very considerate and looked after our group. We learned many interesting historical facts about the city on the run. A nice surprise was that we stopped for donuts halfway through at an amazing place called “Short Stop”. We saw many different laneways which i have not seen before and even saw the inside of the Manchester Unity building - an interesting site that I have seen many times but never bothered to go in to. I can recommend this tour wholeheartedly to anyone who is a local or a tourist. The tour concludes nicely with a coffee in Degraves street. Total tour time is around 2 hours. Pace is based on your ability so don’t be put off by this being a “run”.
