What you'll do

Your portrait session will begin with a tour of the studio and darkrooms, and a rundown of how the wet plate collodion process works. Come knowing the kind of portrait you want and with any props you want to use. While we have space to change outfits, it is best if you come dressed and ready to go. Your portrait is a personal endeavor, and while we can assist with art direction it is up to you to know how you want to look. After your pose is perfected, we will bring you into the darkroom with us as we prepare the metal or glass plate. First, collodion is poured on the plate to coat it. The plate is then put into a bath of silver nitrate at which point it becomes light-sensitive. Once fully sensitized, we will move back to the studio, load the plate into the camera, and use a bright flash to take your portrait. Then it is back to the darkroom where your plate will develop before your eyes. We ask for 90 minutes of your time so multiple plates can be made. You choose your favorite and can buy the other plates for an additional, nominal fee. Leave with your plate freshly varnished, or have it shipped to you for an additional fee once the varnish is dry.

Christine

Tintype portraiture is not a widely practiced type of photography, and Luminaria is one of a handful of places in the country where you can experience it. Our tintypist, Dave, has been working with this process for 10+ years, taking him from Santa Fe to Boston, China, and finally Salt Lake where he started the alternative photography center with partner Christine. She is an SLC native, ready to make you feel at home in this vibrant, eclectic city.

Where you'll be

Luminaria is unlike anything you will find anywhere else. It is an alternative photography studio focusing on bridging digital with analog photographic techniques. The process for making tintypes (wet plate collodion) dates back to the 1850s and this is one of a handful of places in the country where you can experience it. We chose Salt Lake City because we love the city and the landscape, and the art community is vibrant and off the beaten path.
