What you'll do

Kelley House docents lead you on a beautiful and informative walking tour through the preserved-in-time 19th century village of Mendocino, designated as a National Historic Preservation District. The tour takes between 1.5 - 2 hours.

Prepare to be entertained with colorful tales from the town’s rough and tumble past. Learn how a shipwreck led to the discovery of the redwood forest, which brought lumber mills that supplied California’s gold rush era building boom. Visit New England-style pioneer homes, find out why Mendocino is known as the city of water towers, admire gardens with 100-year-old roses, and hear the secrets of a haunted hotel. You’ll learn why so many movie directors have used Mendocino as a shooting location, and how an art renaissance in the ‘60s led to the town’s preservation.

Enjoy Mendocino’s rich cultural heritage, from the Pomo tribe that lived here for thousands of years enjoying the bounties of the land and sea, to the European and Chinese immigrants who built the town you see today.

This was the highlight of my trip to the Mendocino area. I was not expecting the detail and breadth of information on this tour and for the price offered! It was really a delightful tour and the area gorgeous. If you're a history nerd and love informative tours this tour is not to be missed.

Everyone visiting Mendocino would be enriched by this tour! It was very interesting learn more about the early area settlers to the area and more about the history of some of the iconic landmarks. The tour guide, Juliet, had a zest for the history and life and was a delight to listen to. I'm so glad I took the tour. It was not a difficult walk either if that is a concern for anyone.

I was expecting the tour guide to have more information on the history. It seemed like guide was still learning about the history and so wasn’t engaging.

Our tour was wonderful! Juliette was doing her 1st tour as lead with Anne as backup. Juliette's knowledge, energy & loving personality helped to make the different parts of the tour really come to life. You could imagine what life was like in the 1800s. Thank you Juliette & Anne for making the tour so worth booking!

This walking tour is a must in Mendocino. The town has such a rich history and it's a shame to not learn about it while you're there. Jane's enthusiasm for sharing her knowledge made it even better. I'm so glad I decided to go!

Jane was so engaging and so well informed about the history of Mendocino, and full of wonderful anecdotes about many of the most interesting characters involved in the creation of Mendocino village. Her enthusiasm really shines through!
