What you'll do

Travel to the sovereign territory of Akwesasne, a Mohawk nation situated on the St. Lawrence River on the border of the U.S. and Canada. Come on an interactive journey of Mohawk culture, starting with our Creation Story and ending with present day living with Lorna and Mikayla, cultural educators at Native North American Traveling College, a cultural center dedicated to preservation, revitalization and education of Mohawk ways of life.

We will teach you a few Mohawk phrases and offer friendly guidance on pronunciation. We will also share some of our music, life in the Longhouse (no we did not live in tipis), and Wampum belts, early records of stories and treaties. We will also bring out some artifacts from our expansive collection at the Native North American Traveling College. We look forward to getting to know you and sharing a bit more about ourselves. Kanohkwahawi Ionkiats, wakskarewake, Akwesasne nonwe tkiteron, Kanien’kehaka niwakahontsioten. Hi everybody, my Mohawk name is Kanohkwahawi which translates to “She carries her ancestors”, but you can call me Lorna. I am bear clan, I live in Akwesasne, and I’m from the Mohawk Nation. I have lived in Akwesasne most of my life. I attended the Akwesasne Freedom School, a mohawk immersion school whose curriculum is based on our seasonal/ceremonial calendar and our language. I just recently graduated from SUNY Potsdam where I majored in Women’s and Gender Studies, and minored in Museum Studies, Native Studies, and Anthropology. I now work as a cultural educator and assist in museum curation/storage at NNATC. I have also been a co-curator at SUNY Potsdam, and am currently working on a small exhibition at The Wild Center.

This was a great experience! I enjoyed the presentation and learning about Kanien'kehá:ka culture. I learned a lot and appreciate that the hosts took the time to make sure I had my questions answered. It was a great experience to learn more about the history, cultural practices, and stories of the Akwesasne area.

This was an incredible experience to speak with these amazing women about their lives, culture, history, challenges, and hopes for the future. They were so generous with their responses to questions and gave us an authentic view into their life experience. My leadership team learned so much and this has given us new ideas and better language to use. Wonderful!

My hosts were very personable and knowledgeable. I learned a lot of new things, and my hosts checked in to see if I had any questions which were all answered. They were able to help me with pronunciation. Thank you!
