What you'll do

Come into my studio, just across the street from Clark Cottage, and experience the art of handweaving. Sit at a floor loom that is warped and ready for you to weave a tea towel. Choose your color and weave for 1-2 hours to complete the towel. The rhythm of passing the shuttle and treadling the pattern make a magical dance. And each time you use your new tea towel you will remember your visit to Chaplin and your new skill of weaving.

What's included

  • Equipment
Use of a loom, shuttles, yarns to make a tea towel.

I learned to weave over 40 years ago and studied to be a weaving educator in 1990. I learned to weave because I was already a hand spinner and wanted to use my handspun yarns. I volunteer at the Windham Textile History Museum teaching both weaving and spinning. My weaving studio is in my home. I have a collection of looms and spinning wheels in my studio, and I weave scarves, shawls, throws, table linens that I market at the League of NH Craftsmen shops, and at our local open studio tour. One of my looms is controlled by a computer so I can weave complex designs. Sharing my love of textiles makes me happy!

Where you'll be

This little village in Chaplin was built between 1810 and 1840, after the church was completed. It is a National Historic District and it looks just like it did in 1840. Our home was built in 1835 and it hasn't changed much either. My weaving studio wraps around the back of the old house, with lots of space and lots of big windows.
