What you'll do

Our Hyundai H1 picks you up near the Metro station at 22:30 hrs to take you to our spot. Once past the city lights, you’ll look out and wonder about the “clouds” up there. That's not clouds. You are now watching the Milky Way. Stand at awe as light from the core hits your eye. It was emitted 26.000 years ago, before modern humans roamed Terra. Once at the location, I’ll help you to set up, configure your camera at the light of the van, flashlight or cellphone. After that, dark location protocol is in place. While we wait for our eyes to get dark adapted (± 30 min.) we will discuss safety, red light protocol, camera settings and techniques, the observable sky this night and its most outstanding features. Of course, I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have and assist you in any way possible to get the best out of our outing. You can watch the sky with the naked eye or with binoculars, while I will help you to focus the provided telescope on any planet or sky feature that tickles your fancy. Whether you want to sit down, observe and meditate, capture amazing Milky Way images or watch the planets and stars pass by in close-up, this is an outing you don't want to miss

Gerard

I am a trilingual (EN-ES-NL) semi-professional photographer and photography teacher with a passion for the stars. 6 Years ago I started with astro-photography and have hosted shooting parties on numerous occasions. If you prefer watching over shooting, I can help you to identify the most common sky objects, because our location is dark enough for naked eye observation. I also bring a small telescope for planetary and deep sky watching, which is enjoyed by photographers and non-photographers alike. Of course I will make sure you'll bring home some pictures for your friends to wow about

Where you'll be

Considering we are at only 70 km from Santiago, this location is very good. Although I have a darker location at El Yeso lake, it's double the distance and lies on a dirt road that's hard to stomach, for most. To the northwest there is some light pollution, however, the mountains to our back protect us from most of the city light, while to the south and east we look towards the Andes Cordillera. No light in sight for hundreds of miles...
