What you'll do
The Waikato has become the centre of cycling in NZ, not only with the Avantidrome, but an ever expanding network of bike trails including the Te Awa River Ride, Hauraki Rail Trails, South Waikato River Trails and various mountain bike parks and trails. Enjoy a guided ride with us on the Te Awa River Ride from Hamilton to Ngaruawahia and back. This ride is approximately 55km return from New Memorial Park in Hamilton East to the trailhead at Ngaruawahia. This ride takes us over Cobham Bridge by Hamilton Gardens, along the Waikato River, through Hamilton CBD passing the numerous bridges criss crossing the river, finally riding over the new Perry Bridge, a purpose built pedestrian and cycle bridge 130 metres long. We will stop for a drink and a snack in the park at Ngaruawahia before returning by the same route.
My partner, Mark, and I are keen cyclists, although with different interests. Mark has been road cycling and racing for over 35 years, including completing the K2 (200 km around Coromandel Peninsula) 10 times, and the Lake Taupo Challenge (160km around Lake Taupo) 12 times. Together we have also completed Lake Taupo on a tandem. Mark is from Thames and has travelled many kilometres on the Hauraki Rail Trails. My preference is for track cycling at the world class velodrome built in Cambridge in 2014, and home to the world champion NZ track cycling team (www.avantidrome.co.nz).

Where you'll be
This tour offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy these parts of the Waikato from a viewpoint not many visitors see. Cycling along the river you will see why it is called the Mighty Waikato. Metres from Hamilton CBD you would have no idea you were in the heart of the country's 4th largest city.
