What you'll do
We are pleased to share our knowledge with you as we show you around our home, Earthsong Eco Neighbourhood. Your will be here for one and a half hours and will be given either a slide presentation for groups or a more informal walk and talk; a guided tour of the site and a look through one of our homes. You will learn about the history, philosophy and environmental aspects behind including design, materials, water and energy use, permaculture and sustainable transport options. Social sustainability is a core value for us so you will hear about the social aspects of living in an intentional community such as consensus decision making, living together as a community and getting work done around the site. By balancing individual privacy and autonomy with cooperation and commitment to the community and by applying the principles of green architecture and services on a neighbourhood scale we demonstrate a multi-layered approach to creating a healthier and more sustainable living environment. On application it may be possible to have residents whose first language is Japanese or German to host groups according to their availability. Please ask.
Hiya from Barbara Woodman, founding member and resident of Earthsong Eco Neighbourhood for seventeen years. I am passionate about environmental and social sustainability particularly waste minimisation; upcycling and organic gardening. I enjoy demonstrating these principles to all, including as a tutor of sewing, knitting natural yarns, mending clothes, upcycling, and growing food. When showing visitors around, my life is enriched and I can showcase a way of living I believe in. One of my wonderful community neighbours, Rosemary Barrett or Russell Joyce, might host you on the day.
About the organization
Earthsong Education Trust
The Earthsong Centre Trust manages our outreach activities, educating the public in the principles of socially, environmentally and economically sustainable urban living based on co-housing. A key motivation for developing our neighbourhood was to demonstrate a more sustainable urban neighbourhood model. We feel the biggest contribution we can make to sustainability is to share what we've learnt.
This is a social impact experience where 100% of what you pay for this experience goes to Earthsong Education Trust.

Where you'll be
Your visit to Earthsong Eco Neighbourhood will include a guided tour of the site and a look through one of our natural houses. The talk will cover the history, philosophy and environmental aspects behind our community and allow for your questions. Earthsong is built on an old organic orchard in a suburb of Auckland city but feels like a small village. We chose land near public transport, library, etc, to that so we need to use our cars less
