What you'll do

Come learn how to create beautiful Shibori designs. Dye natural fibers in the indigo vat to produce beautiful blues. Go home with your own unique Shibori Indigo designs. It is magic to watch the dye turn from a yellow green to indigo blue as it oxidizes! We will begin looking at some sample fibers I have dyed. Using wood blocks, plexiglass shapes, found objects and rubber bands & clamps to constrain the dye, you will make various white and indigo patterns. Shibori and tie dye techniques will be used. Look through my binder where various techniques are explained. Have fun an experiment! First dye a test piece cotton fabric to dye to see what works. Then choose 3 more pieces to dye. Choose from napkins, dish towels, tote bags or fabric. Additional items can be purchased for a small fee. Feel free to bring your own natural fibers to dye. Wear clothes that you don't mind if some dye inadvertently splashes on, and shoes you won't mind getting wet. This is an outside activity, so dress appropriately in layers. This class runs for two hours. If you wish to stay longer, to dye more items, the hourly fee is $45/hour; for a maximum of two additional hours. Anything goes! Have fun!

Welcome to Still Water Bindery. After a trip to Japan over six years ago, I was enthralled with anything Indigo and the art of Shibori. I am still exploring the magic of Shibori Indigo Dyeing and will share my knowledge with you, so you can make some fabulous items to take home . . .

Where you'll be

We will use my old 1830's barn and the deck behind Still Water Bindery for this workshop. We will work in the red barn attached to the house, next to where you park for most of the time. The dye vat and materials to make your Shibori designs are located in the barn. After your pieces are dyed and ready to dry, we will hang them on the clothes line on the bindery deck, a short walk from the barn across the lawn.
