What you'll do

Are you an aspiring writer? Would you like to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your storytelling while visiting New Orleans, the most literary and evocative city in the USA? Be inspired by your time here, as we meet in the French Quarter, the iconic heartbeat of the city that inspired generations of writers, from William Faulkner to Tennessee Williams to Ann Rice. Whether you need help with the start of your novel, if your short story needs fine tuned, or maybe you just enjoy the craft of writing, I can help you improve, sharpen and strengthen your skills in a focused one-on-one setting. We will meet in a coffee shop frequented by the locals, and I will buy you a beverage to enjoy while I read your writing. Then I will give you honest but constructive feedback, and my professional critique will explain what you did right, what you did wrong, and most importantly, how it can be improved. Give me a complete tale, a small part of a story, or simply stream-of-consciousness musings. Bring your writing with you or email me in advance - you decide the amount of time I spend on reading versus critiquing, and you ask the questions you want answered.

Learn more about Stephen

Stephen

I'm originally from Northern Ireland but have lived in New Orleans since 2004. I've written two books, one for the biggest publisher in the South and the other commissioned by a New York publisher. Both were critically acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic and I won a Tennessee Williams / New Orleans Literary Festival writers’ award. I've taught fiction-writing courses in New Orleans for eight years, firstly at Loyola University's Walker Percy Center, and for the last four years I have ran my own writing classes. At least six of my students have gone onto become published authors.

Where you'll be

My default meeting place is a locals' coffee shop away from the tourist hordes on Bourbon Street. It is busy enough to have an energy, but rarely too packed to find seating. HOWEVER PLEASE NOTE - I am happy to come to you if you prefer. Want to meet outdoors in Jackson Square, or overlooking the Mississippi? Want me to come to your Uptown airbnb or your CBD hotel lobby? As long as you are staying in the city, I can bring the experience to you.

More tips

I suggest you provide about 1,500 words (probably six pages) for me to critique. I think that is enough to discern your strengths and weaknesses, but you are welcome to give me more or less.
