What you'll do

The Sooke Potholes is a popular swimming spot through the summer, but the fall brings rain and cooler temperatures offering park users a more tranquil experience. Though sightings aren't guaranteed, Coho & Chinook Salmon can be spotted from Oct-Dec. Black bears are common in the area as well. As a life-long resident of the Sooke/Victoria area, I'm happy to answer any questions about the area or offer any tips on places around town. We'll arrive at the park at approx 10:00 am and enjoy a hike along the Riverside Trail, with views of waterfalls, narrow canyons, and pebbled swimming holes to take in along the way. Actual hiking time will be approx 1.5hrs round trip. Elements of Shinrin-Yoku (Forest Therapy) will be offered for your enjoyment or consideration throughout the hike. We will stop to enjoy the tranquil surroundings along the river and I will lead you through a 10 minute guided meditation practice incorporating your five senses to help further your connection with the natural world. We'll enjoy some light snacks & a hot cup of tea made from wild-sourced ingredients. In the event of inclement weather, the seated mediation practice can be replaced by smaller moments of mindfulness throughout your hike.

Where you'll be

There are plenty of beautiful places listed on the park map, but as someone who has been exploring the Sooke Potholes long before it was even a protected park, I'll guide you to some stunning areas that aren't packed with other park users. We'll also stop at Charters Creek to view the spawning area created by the local Salmon Enhancement Society. This a great chance to learn about the vital importance of Salmon in the west coast rain forests.
