Hoodoo, Voodoo and a Bottle of Rum

New Orleans, United States

Experience hosted by Jean-Marcel

2 hours
Includes drinks
Up to 10 people
Hosted in English

What you'll do

A short walk through Congo Square culminating in a talk at my studio in the Treme neighborhood about Hoodoo, Voodoo, Black Carnival Traditions, the deeds and misdeeds of my own Louisiana Creole ancestors and other lesser known aspects of New Orleans history and culture. In my studio rum bar you will enjoy a shot of rum and a chance to check out my art and black masking Indian attire. My house has long been a place where friends come to ground themselves in the cultural vibration of the city. I am so excited to now share this experience with you!

Other things to note:

THIS IS NOT A TOUR. It’s not focused on site seeing but rather an EXPERIENCE that uses a few sites as a backdrop, so if you are looking for a site seeing tour this will not meet your expectations.
With that said, while the majority of my presentation will be at my studio, we will also walk the equivalent of six blocks through the park and stand in one place for long periods. Please wear comfortable shoes and stay hydrated because the heat can be oppressive, especially in the summer. BTW - NO PHOTOS of my studio or myself are allowed, thank U.

I'm an artist and 12th-generation Afro-Creole. My family fled Louisiana in 1970 to escape racial oppression. I returned 15 years ago to reconnect with the land of my ancestors. I make art with wood salvaged from my Katrina-damaged home in Treme, and mask as a Medicine Man in the Black Masking Indian tradition. My art is in the permanent collection of the American Folk Art Museum and in the homes of art-lovers worldwide.

Where you'll be

The experience takes place roughly an hour in the park and an hour at my studio, which is seldom open to the public. After Hurricane Katrina, I converted former slave quarters into an art studio, Hoodoo shop, and guest rooms.

I had a feeling this was going to be great... believe the reviews. Prepare to hear the real history of New Orleans and the US. The way history is woven into a beautiful woven quit of all of our history. Upon going on the tour you will understand the reference. This is a must tour, in my humble opinion.

This was an incredible experience and a MUST for anyone visiting New Orleans. All the amazing reviews are 100% accurate. Jean-Marcel is brilliant! You got culture, grit, and a personal story that isn’t being told anywhere else. And don’t forget the rum! My husband and I both enjoy rum. He’s Guyanese and loves his El Dorado and I’m Haitian and love my Barbancourt and the rum was smooth and flavorful. I’m inspired by the experience and will bring back friends the next time I’m in town. Suggestion: Go early in your trip, it frames up the rest of the trip.
