About your host

I am pursuing a PhD in U.S. history at UCLA. The focus of my research is L.A.'s history. Before that, I spent five years teaching middle and high school history and geography at a local independent prep school. Having grown up in northern L.A., an area where my family has lived for three generations, I feel deeply bonded to the place. But please, don't be afraid to ask critical questions about…

What we’ll do

Come by Metro lightrail for a tour of central L.A.'s cultural history. Meet me at L.A.'s Union Station where I will be waiting in front of Traxx Restaurant, near the building's west entrance. First, an artwalk in that most unlikely of places: the 101 freeway. First, we will find one weird sculpture, The New World, by punk artist Tom Otterness. There are also a few murals from the 1984 Olympics…

What else you should know

Please come ready to walk a couple miles, to climb stairs, to be a careful pedestrian in crosswalks, to attend carefully to loved ones, and to be courteous to all, including housing insecure people.

What I’ll provide

Snacks
Churros ($2.50-3.50)
Drinks
Horchata ($2-3)

What to bring

Water, sun protection, reliable footwear, cash for snacks/shopping

Where you'll be

L.A.'s downtown district is quite the fortress city where folks struggle to find parking, to navigate the transit, or to feel like they safely belong. The places I have on this list include a number of public-access locations which do not always look open to visitors. Since I have explored this area with students, with visiting scholars from universities like Berkeley, Cornell, and Witwatersrand, and with friends, I promise a fun adventure.
