What you'll do

After meeting in a central location or at your hotel, we'll start walking around the beautiful city of Ghent, but instead of visiting the main tourist attractions, that you can easily visit by yourself, we'll go 'beyond' the usual tourist itinerary and will instead (or rather in addition) see several hidden gems, that are just as interesting and beautiful but are often unknown to the majority of tourists. For instance, a typical Flemish beguinage or an abbey's vineyard hidden in the city. Besides the history and background of the places, I will also talk about interesting facts of local life and culture in Ghent and Belgium as well as the (sometimes complicated) Belgian political and socio-economic context. I might even share an interesting (personal and funny) story or two. One of the other focuses of our walk will be on the socially and ecologically innovative character of Ghent. But Ghent is not perfect and I will also cover its problems and challenges through things we see along the way. Somewhere in the middle of the tour, we'll have a drink in a very authentic and special place and I'll let you choose among a few options, depending on your drink preference.

Natalie

I was born and raised in the Ghent area but I've lived in many countries to study and work (including Australia, US, Peru and Spain). I have a PhD in political and social studies with a focus on human and cultural rights and I've worked in Peru and the US on ethical or responsible tourism. I'm intrigued by local cultures, diversity and socio-economic and political background of places I live in and visit and I'm a strong believer in the potential of sustainable and responsible tourism, issues I have worked on as a student and as a professional.

Where you'll be

We will start our walk with several interesting places and hidden gems in the historic center of Ghent before moving on to first the southern district of central Ghent, where not tourists but locals and students are in the majority. We'll then pass through the district just east of the historic center to finally end the walk back where we started.
