Between 9pm and 9:30pm we will pick up our guests and drive outside of Yellowknife, away from the lights of the city to where the skies are completely clear, perfect for viewing the Northern Lights.

After about a 25-minute drive we will arrive at a secluded and private frozen lake which we will walk across, up a small hill to our final destination, a canvas tent nestled in the Boreal Forest in a very picturesque setting.

From about 10:30 pm to 1 am we will enjoy the Aurora Borealis as it comes and goes across the sky. The canvas tent which will be heated by wood stove upon our arrival, offers some open spaces for viewing the Northern Lights, one which overlooks the small lake. During this time guests will be treated to a hot beverage and locally inspired treat.

As we are viewing the Aurora we will also offer our guests help taking photos of the Aurora. We have years of photography experience and in some cases can take photos of you with the Aurora for you take receive after the tour.

At about 1 am we will leave, walk back to the vehicle and back to town where guests will be dropped off at their accommodations.

I'm a lifelong Yellowknifer and publisher of Yellowknife Online. I have experienced the Aurora Borealis my entire life as well as spent a significant amount of time in the bush perfecting my bushcraft skills. I specialize in providing a rustic and authentic Aurora Borealis experience from the comfort of a wood stove heated canvas tent in the Boreal Forest.

Our trip to see the Aurora Borealis with Kyle was great! He took us away from the city down a windy forest road to a lovely spot over looking a lake. The tent was insulated and a wood stove kept us cozy. Hot tea was great. The location really allowed us to see the stars as well as the lights amongst the entire sky. Kyle helped us adjust our DSL camera and take some gorgeous pictures of the Northern Lights. He also took a photo of us with the lights in the background using a trick of shining a flashlight on us during exposure. It turned out great! It was an extremely memorable event.

What Kyle offers to the uninitiated of the frozen Tundra (if the experience is done in the dead of winter and yes, it IS COLD, and one must suit up in every whichway), is a magical experience which starts with a private pick up at yr accomodations, a short ride out of town, a careful veer of twists and turns on a dirt road leading deeper into the woods, and an ethereal 10-minute trek into the Boreal forest, under the moon and stars, to reach a small clearing just under a ridge and between two small frozen lakes, from which one can choose to wait and possibly view the auroras. The clearing hosts a previously set-up spacious and decorated winter tent in which Kyle entertains his guests with local lore and friendly conversations, a warm iron cast wood burner/heater, and hot tea with home-made cookies, bannock bread and forest berries jam. Kyle keeps the group to a private number of just about four people, so our companions quickly became friends who shrieked and hollered in awe, together with us, at the sight of a beautiful dancing aurora that lit up the northern skies, much to our delight and our host's satisfaction. I would rate this one of my life's best memories so far, thanks to a kind, thoughtful, unassuming and well-prepared local host and guide. This is an experience to cherish for a lifetime.

If you're looking for an aurora viewing trip with laughs and excited stories, Kyle is the best. Btw, you can easily watch aurora by urself around yellowknife, but Kyle can tell you a lot of stories about yellowknife and aurora. To me, aurora is important but histories and stories are unique addons. Thanks Kyle for the amazing night.
