What you'll do
We’ll hike trails in beautiful Red Rocks Park, beginning among its famous towering sandstone monoliths. Your hike will be greatly enhanced with a professional geologist guiding you. We’ll examine the rocks up close for clues as to their origins and history, surrounded by stunning mountain vistas opening to the great plains below. We’ll see 200 million years of earth history as recorded in the rocks, well before the uplift of the present-day Rockies. We’ll see igneous and metamorphic rocks 1.7 billion years old, overlain by younger sediments deposited beginning with the uplift of the ancestral Rockies, and see how subsequent sediments accumulated under environmental conditions that changed dramatically time and again. In the distance, we’ll trace younger sediments spanning much of the age of the dinosaurs. Using a “hand lens,” we’ll examine the rocks closely for mineral composition and textures that reveal the nature of the rocks and their otherwise untold journey. Principles we’ll learn here will transfer to many other geologic settings to enhance your enjoyment of the underlying geology wherever you go.
