What you'll do
DAY OF THE DEAD STILL LIFE PAINTING is a painting class for students to participate in Mexico's most sacred and mythic event thru a still life class giving students the opportunity to honor loved ones who have passed away. The class is a 4 hour class that begins at 1pm and ends at 5pm. At 1pm an orientation & meso american history will be given about the meaning of the ofrendas and their props. Afterwards, students will choose traditional day of the dead props like cempasuchil (marigolds), sugar skulls, sahumerios (incensce burners) filled with copal, velas (candles) mezcal, fruits and other symbolic objects. From these, we will design personalized ofrendas, still lifes honoring the dead. Students are encouraged to bring framed photos of one of their beloveds to incorporate into their ofrendas and will leave with a painting that serves as a beautiful memory. You can choose watercolor or oil painting.
I am a world renown artist from San Francisco California and founder of Galería Nepantla which investigates spiritual transcendence in the form of art using personal experience. Being of Puerto Rican and Mexican descent under the tutelage of the Catholic church, inspired me to tell my own stories that weaves cultural & contemporary archetypes within a spiritual paradigm. I received my B.F.A from the University of Kansas in Painting in 1988 and have been exhibiting my works and giving classes since. I enjoy giving others the power to experience their own imagination, culture and skills in art.
