What you'll do

I will walk with you through each exhibit (The "Big House", The Landscape, The Sugarcane, The Slave Quarters, & The Blacksmith Shop) & share with you the history of each exhibit. The "Big House": We will tour Jacques & Celina Roman’s "Greek Revival" style mansion, built in 1837 by their slaves. The architecture has classical elements, and is also well-suited to Louisiana’s weather. The Landscape: Oak Alley's landscape with her 28 evenly spaced 300 year old Southern Live Oak Trees is breathtaking. We will walk alongside the Great Oaks & learn the history behind them. Taking photos of and with them are a MUST! The Sugarcane: AKA "White Gold", where you will learn the history of the Sugarcane process then & now. We will go back in time to see what life was like as a field slave. Slaves weeded rows of sugarcane in the summer and harvested them in the early winter, a season known as grinding. The Slave Quarters: We will walk in the footsteps of slaves as we enter their quarters. See & learn how hard life was for people of different color. The Blacksmith Shop: You will learn the enduring legacy of Louisiana craftsmen and share the history of forging metalwork on plantations.

Where you'll be

Oak Alley Plantation is located in Vacherie Louisiana, about 45 miles from New Orleans. Oak Alley was a sugarcane plantation, owned by a French Creole family, the Romans. From its 28 evenly spaced 300 year old Southern Live Oaks to its open spaces, Oak Alley’s Landscape tells the story of a plantation in its evolution. The historic grounds and exhibits at Oak Alley Plantation reflect this evolution at this 200 year old National Historic site.
