What you'll do

This time, I will take you to a tiny town in the neighbor Campeche State, located less than one hour from Mérida, famous for its well known handmade Jipijapa or "Panama" Hats. You will be received in one of the Handcraft makers house and you will have the opportunity to visit their garden where the Jipijapa Palm trees and other plants that are used in the process are planted. You will also visit one of a kind phenomenon that only happen in this town which is that they are natural caves that used to be filed with waters likes the cenotes but not connected to the underwater canals. So today they are dry, and the people of the village has built they houses next to it with a tunnel access so it give the perfect humidity and temperature to make those hats. Sharing a moment with the "Artisan" while they are making Hats and being told the entire process from the types of Palm tree used till the frame process to shape the hats is something unique that I really like and I have to say that I learn something extra each time!

Franck

I am originally from France living in Mexico for 10 years; I arrived in Merida- Yucatan 2 years ago and I was amazed by the beauty of its beaches, the elegance of the Mayan pyramids and the mystery of Cenotes. I also discovered a very particular traditional handcraft art of making Hat that is typical of a village not far from Merida and so I started to link with the artisans and I decided to share this experience with more people. Sure that you will appreciate their know-how in the manufacture of these very popular hats known as Panama or Jipijapa. The best option for hat lovers and at the end of the experience you will have the possibility to get one of those beauty back at your home town !
