What you'll do
First, we will explore a local market next to my apartment. I buy all the groceries we need for cooking in the market. You'll be able to meet the regulars in the market and take a look at all the fresh ingredients used in Korean cuisine. After shopping, we'll go to my home—a local residence built in the 1970s—and you'll cook in my kitchen. I will share recipes, cooking tips, and introduce you to the characteristics of Korean food culture. You'll then cook your own Bibimbab—a bowl meal with mixed rice, meat, and vegetables—and Tteokgalbi—a dish made with minced beef short ribs. I will also show you how to cook a Korean-flavored tofu salad and pancake. We'll enjoy our meal in a dining room decorated with traditional crafts. You will leave with tasty memories of Korean dishes that you can share with your family and friends when you return home.
When I was young, my dad worked as a cook, but he didn't want me become one because he thought the work was too hard. After college, I worked at a ship building company until 2014. I didn't enjoy office work as I preferred fun activities and sharing memorable moments with others. So I took a course in Korean cooking at a culinary school in Seoul and changed my entire career. I am now a full-time chef who gives cooking classes to international students. Sharing my passion for Korean cooking with others gives me a sense of satisfaction and happiness, and I've been doing this since spring 2017.
All ingredients I'll provide the ingredients for four main dishes, plus steamed rice, Kimchi—fermented vegetables, and side…
Cooking equipment I'll provide an apron, stove, pans, and other cooking items.
Where you'll be
We will stop at one of the popular local markets in the city. It is located near Hongik University, which is a hip area in western Seoul. After visiting the local market, we will head to my house to cook Korean food.
