What you'll do

We'll be at a rustic studio close to the sea, listening, sniffing, looking around. We'll look through lenses that alter our seeing. We'll handle pencils and papers while exploring cycles of activity and rest. We'll talk and spend time in silence. We'll investigate/play with contents of a cabinet that's full of mark-making materials. We'll notice how much variety comes from basic tools. We'll use prompts: sounds, words and textures to express our energy in various ways. We'll try fastening paper onto a tube fixed to a small wheel and draw while it's revolving. That frees us from judging (how can you judge what's seen as a blur?) We'll notice how our expectations and interpretations can repeat or disrupt learned habits. Applauding surprise, participants will guide the process based on what's happened. As creative allies we take cues from what arises and leave time for Q&A that's bound to imply some directions for future. The cool-down time allows for reflecting together about what we take-home from our experiences. Forget or be ever-changed?

Learn more about Joan

Joan

Since childhood I've lost track of time when staring at light on objects in space. Drawing light, as it is separate from color, enlightens me. Some might name it meditation. I think of it as refreshing balance for my time spent pecking at keyboards. During decades when I made pots from globs of clay, I designed surfaces by predicting how shapes of light and shadow would result from space moving around textures. Bonding with light is a sense experience for me that propels me into boundless space. View "About Joan" for specifics at https://www.thesoftearthspeaks.com/joans-resume.ht

What's included

Drinks
Water and juice.
Equipment
Use of basic drawing materials: pencils, charcoal, erasers and various paper samples. Bring your own if you have some.

Where you'll be

Close enough to ocean to hear waves lapping, we'll begin inside the rustic studio that I've rented for more than forty years, named The Soft Earth. You'll get to see a range of basic materials from which most art supplies are made. We'll spend time outside if weather is friendly -- we'll decide that together.

Things to keep in mind

Cancellation policy

Any experience can be cancelled and fully refunded within 24 hours of purchase, or at least 7 days before the experience starts.

Communication policy

Always communicate through Airbnb. To protect your payment, never transfer money or communicate outside of the Airbnb website or app.

Guest requirements

Up to 5 guests ages 12 and up can attend. Children and adults together can work well -- unattended children not allowed. Great for all ages otherwise. Experience is not needed.

Government ID

You’ll need to take a picture of yourself that matches the photo on your ID. This is so Airbnb can confirm who’s actually going on the experience. You’ll only have to do this once.

More tips

No exact address because studio was a boat-house on an estate. We use an outdoor hose for washing and a chemical toilet or Porta-Potty. Roaming surrounding property is not permitted.
