What you'll do
We'll roll up our sleeves and jump right in! We'll start by learning about the ancient Jewish rituals and traditions around challah and their origins from the time of King Solomon's temple, while munching on a full spread of local and international foods and dips such as hummus, crackers, cheese. Then, our hands-on baking class begins: each baker will have their own station and will learn the art of activating the yeast, making and kneading the dough, proofing dough, braiding the challah, and baking it to fluffy perfection. I'll be baking right alongside you so you can learn all my pro tips and tricks. While we wait for the dough to rise (~1 hour) we can tour the neighborhood, continue our conversations, or play board games! We'll come back to braid and coat the bread, and once it's ready and baked, we'll break bread together and enjoy our challah with some delicious dips :) Each baker will take home 1-2 loaves of challah bread. Great for families, friends, and teams. For big groups, we will bake 4 of the challahs together and the remainder can go home with you in a sturdy container to bake later. Vegan and gluten-free available on request.
As Airbnb's first challah experience host, I love teaching baking classes on the ancient Jewish tradition of making this braided bread! This is a tradition that has been passed down in my culture from generation to generation, and when I left my job in consulting, I became eager to teach others about the ritual and craft of making and braiding challah, as well as share on the rich Jewish culture that makes up San Francisco’s history, my Ashkenazi and Mizrahi Jewish heritage, and my lifetime of study of Jewish tradition. Baking challah is a fun, delicious, and even therapeutic part of my weekly routine, and I love sharing (and eating) it with others!

Where you'll be
We will conduct our workshop in a traditional San Francisco Victorian home right off of the famous Mission Dolores Park - a park with a rich Jewish history of its own! While we're waiting for the bread to rise, I'll facilitate a group conversation, bring out board games, or may give a personal tour of some of my favorite San Francisco sites in the Mission and Castro!
